Cairns Thursday  28 May 2020

Race 8. Ratings Band 0-65 Handicap 1250m

Stewards inquired into an incident which occurred near the 950m resulting in interference to PURRHAPS (B Thomson) and SPEED EIGHT (G Watson). After speaking with the 2 aforementioned riders, as well as Jockey F Edwards (TAPTHETILL) and App M Potgieter (I’M NOT SURE) and viewing available patrol footage, it was established that approaching the point of the 1st turn I’M NOT SURE had shifted in marginally, crowding TAPTHETILL, which in turn shifted in and away from that runner. As a result both PURRHAPS and SPEED EIGHT which were racing to the inside of TAPTHETILL had to be checked. As Stewards were of the opinion that F Edwards could have made a greater effort to give the 2 runners to his inside more room he was reprimanded for careless riding. AR131(a).

Stewards inquired into the reason why Apprentice K. Swaffer was dislodged from DIVINE MELODY near the 900m. After hearing evidence from Apprentice Swaffer (in the presence of her Master Mr T Rowe), and Jockeys S Wiseman (BEAT IT) and F Edwards (CHEESE BURGER) and viewing the available footage, it was established that as the field reached the point of the first turn DIVINE MELODY which had jumped from the inside barrier  was racing in restricted room to the inside of BEAT IT. At that time CHEESE BURGER crossed to the inside rail to the lead. Soon after DIVINE MELODY which was following shifted out after making contact with the running rail and bumped with BEAT IT causing Apprentice Swaffer to become unbalanced and subsequently dislodged. As it was evident from the footage and confirmed by the evidence of Apprentice Swaffer and Jockey Wiseman that CHEESE BURGER was fully clear prior to crossing to the rail and had no input into the incident, Stewards attributed the incident to the racing manners of DIVINE MELODY, although noting it was in restricted room, and took no further action. Apprentice Swaffer was subsequently stood down from her remaining engagements and advised a medical clearance would be required prior to resuming race riding. Rider replacements were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet. A post-race veterinary inspection revealed DIVINE MELODY had sustained an injury to the off fore hoof in the incident and Trainer Ms. R Inglis was advised a clearance would be required prior to next race start.
