Race 2: Paddyfest March 14 Maiden Handicap – 1650m

Due to a clerical error App A. Thompson was not declared as the rider of NITROGLYCERINE by the prescribed time. After taking evidence from Trainer B. Brown Stewards accepted his explanation.

Correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey R. Wiggins the rider of TORRIENTE, which was declared equal third, and Stewards to view the photo finish image. As there was insufficient evidence before the Stewards to alter the Judge’s decision Stewards gave correct weight on the Judge’s placings.

NITROGLYCERINE - Trainer T. Brown advised the intention would be to ride the gelding more forward today if circumstances permit. NITROGLYCERINE was ridden forward to obtain the lead shortly after the start. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the gelding Mr Brown advised that at its previous start it was not his intention to have the gelding race in a rearward position however, after being hampered at the start it raced further back than anticipated. He further added that with the step up in distance for today’s event and to be more positive and settle in a forward position may have contributed to its improved performance today. Stewards noted his explanation.

DORISS – Began awkwardly. After passing the 1100m when the pace steadied commenced to overrace. Forced wider approaching the home turn when SAN BERNARDINO shifted out to improve.

WURNIC – Slow into stride and then hampered by DORISS. Held up from the 400m until passing the 300m.

In giving consideration to the mare’s poor performance Trainer V. Heading was advised the mare’s nominations would be refused at metropolitan meetings until such time as its form improves to an acceptable standard.

Following his ride in this event Jockey R. Wiggins was examined by the Club’s Doctor and stood down from his remaining ride in Race 3 and subsequently replaced as the rider of AWESOME POWER by S. Cormack.

Stewards noted his explanation.

STEEL PIER – Fractious in the gates prior to the start being effected and shortly after the start failed to muster any early speed and raced in a rearward position. Approaching the 1000m had to be restrained to avoid the heels of MOSSFAIR, which was inconvenienced by SLIGHTLY SHADY and lost ground. Over the concluding stages failed to respond to riding and then when placed under pressure in the home straight failed to respond. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

MOSSFAIR – Began awkwardly. Shortly after the start had to be restrained and lost ground when crossed by the erratic SLIGHTLY SHADY.

Jockey M. McGillivray (FLATTER) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that approaching the 150m he directed his mount inwards to the inside of the heels of VIVENDO IL SOGNO where there was insufficient room causing tightening to LESHRAC, which in turn was forced inwards onto IN GREAT NIC, which was forced in crowding KAORU KING, which had to be checked by its rider and lost ground. Jockey McGillivray’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of six (6) days to commence midnight 28 February 2020 and expire midnight 5 March 2020.

Jockey R. Fradd (VIVENDO IL SOGNO) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a) in that approaching the 100m he made insufficient effort from preventing his  mount shifting in under riding causing tightening to FLATTER, which in turn then caused tightening to LESHRAC, IN GREAT NIC and KAORU KING, which had to be checked by its rider and lost ground. Jockey Fradd’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of four (4) days to commence midnight 22 February 2020 and expire midnight 26 February 2020.

In determining the appropriate penalty for both riders Stewards were of the opinion that the carelessness was in the low range but the degree of interference was in the mid range. Therefore in considering both riders’ good recent records in relation to this Rule   Stewards felt that the appropriate penalty be a ten (10) day suspension for the interference suffered and apportioned blame as per the penalties above.

After arriving at the barriers ANARCHY underwent a pre-race veterinary examination at the request of its rider and was cleared to start.

ANARCHY – Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
