GENERAL

Stewards accepted trainer C. Waller’s explanation for the late declaration of riders for FAIRY ME HOME and PROSPECTUS (Race 4) and HE RUNS AWAY (Race 7).

Following a delay resulting from stewards investigating a COVID-19 venue compliance breach, the times for Races 5 to 8 were put back on race start time, with Race 9 being rescheduled to 4:58 pm.

Race 1: TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY QTIS 3YO H'CAP – 1350M

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow R. Stewart, the rider of 3rd placegetter IMALI, to view the patrol footage to determine whether he had grounds on which to lodge an objection.

BANGERS AND MAYO – Bumped by FLEET DOVE near the 1100m and taken wider on the track. Raced three wide to a point near the 900m and was ridden forward to race outside the leader KASEAR. Severely hampered near the 100m.

BELLISSIMI AMICI – Hampered at the start. Attempted a run to the inside of KASEAR near the 200m where there was insufficient room and as a result had to be checked off that runner’s heels and shifted wider in an effort to obtain clear running. Apprentice A. Thompson was cautioned for attempting a run where there was insufficient room.

FLEET DOVE – Jumped inwards at the start and hampered BELLISSIMI AMICI. Overraced in the early stages. Shifted out around the heels of KASEAR near the 1100m and bumped BANGERS AND MAYO, taking that runner wider on the track. M. Du Plessis was advised to show greater care when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Jockey Du Plessis reported that his mount raced quite greenly today, carrying the winkers for the first time and the blinkers off, and in his opinion has come to the end of its current preparation. Trainer K. Schweida advised that the filly would now be sent for a spell.

KASEAR – Inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 300m. Severely hampered near the 100m.

EELLOH – Inconvenienced and taken wider on the home turn by FLEET DOVE.

IMALI – Held up in the home straight. Attempted to shift to the outside of FLEET DOVE LEAVING THE 300m and soon afterwards FLEET DOVE shifted out under pressure and then near the 100m IMALI shifted to the inside of FLEET DOVE and that runner shifted in soon afterwards, resulting in BANGERS AND MAYO and KASEAR being severely hampered.

Race 2: BRC MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL F&M BENCHMARK 72 H'CAP – 1110M

FOXPACK – Raced three wide in the early stages before being ridden forward. Inclined to lay out under pressure over the final 300m.

SAY HAYA – Lost the near fore plate in running.

KATY’S DAUGHTER – Raced three wide without cover throughout. S. Thornton reported that her mount did not handle today’s track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

MOTOMISS – Slow to begin.

Race 3: XXXX DRY CLASS 6 H'CAP – 1350M

ALPINE DANCER – Slow to begin.

POTRO DURO – R. Fradd stated that his mount did not handle today’s soft track conditions and he was further of the opinion that it has come to the end of its preparation. Co-trainer Trent Edmonds confirmed that the gelding would be sent for a spell following today’s race.

SNOWZONE – Overraced in the early stages. Shifted out under pressure over the final stages and inconvenienced PARKO.

LEROYTHECONQUEROR – Inconvenienced near the 300m when forced wider by ROMAN AUREUS, which shifted out to improve. J. Bayliss was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, being one more than permissible under the rules.

PARKO – Inconvenienced over the final stages.

Following the running of this race J. Bayliss was stood down from his remaining engagements by the Club doctor and riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 4: SOUTHS SPORTS CLUB CLASS 3 PLATE – 1615M

REUS – Forced wider approaching the 900m and obliged to raced three wide for the remainder of the event.

PROSPECTUS – Trainer C. Waller advised that the gelding would be ridden back in the field from the wide barrier. The horse was ridden accordingly. Overraced in the early stages. Improved between ULTIMATE RING and REUS when overracing approaching the 900m, resulting in REUS being forced wider and being obliged to raced three wide for the remainder of the event.

AXELLA – Raced three wide throughout without cover.

ROSSMAY – As B. Stewart was to be overweight, he was replaced by S. Cormack. B. Stewart was fined $500. Raced in restricted room near the 500m between ULTIMATE RING and FAIRY ME HOME, which was shifting out to improve.

Race 5: TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY BENCHMARK 80 H'CAP – 1615M

TOP PROSPECT – Apprentice J. Murphy stated that he could offer no tangible explanation for the horse’s performance today. Mr Mel Eggleston, representing trainer Kris Lees, advised that TOP PROSPECT is better suited when able to sit up near the lead and dictate the tempo of the race, and furthermore, the stable intends to back the horse up in the following week. Apprentice Murphy was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, being one more than permissible under the rules. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be short-striding in front.

MORENDI – Held up approaching and rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight.

CARRY ON RINGO – Raced three wide in the early stages before being ridden forward to race outside the leader by the 1100m.

Race 6: CASCADE C,G&E BENCHMARK 72 H'CAP – 1110M

DANAWI – Had to be checked when tightened for room on jumping.

MAN IN MOTION – Jumped awkwardly and shifted in, resulting in LUCKY FIX being taken in across the running of DANAWI, which had to be checked.

MOSCINI – Began to overrace passing the 800m and as a result had to shift wider and raced three wide with cover. M. Cahill was questioned regarding his tactics rounding the home turn and in the home straight. He stated that initially he did consider shifting MOSCINI wide on the track to the inside of DISTRICT in order to improve but soon afterwards FOR MY ANNIE shifted out, which prevented him from shifting out so he elected to shift to the inside in an attempt to gain clear running. He then became awkward on the heels of ROYAL HALE approaching and passing the 200m and was only able to test his mount over the final stages. Jockey Cahill added that in his opinion MOSCINI had more to offer if he had have obtained clear running in the straight.

DISTRICT – Raced three wide with cover. Apprentice E. Smith was reprimanded for using her whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m, being two more than permissible under the rules.

FOR MY ANNIE – Fractious in the barriers, removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Trainer L. Hatch was advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners. Raced three wide without cover.

AHEADOFHISTIME – Held up from the 600m until soon after straightening.

Race 7: QUINCY BENCHMARK 78 H'CAP – 2200M

SHIRANDA – Soon after passing the winning post on the first occasion had to ease to avoid the heels of PRINCE OF ARRAN, which shifted in when not quite clear. Shifted in when commencing to weaken approaching the 600m and tightened ROMANI COUNTESS. The veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding was slightly short-striding in the off foreleg.

DASHING SPECIAL – Hampered and taken wider passing the 350m.

TRAVISTEE – Hampered and taken wider passing the 350m.

HE RUNS AWAY – Unable to improve form the 600m until obtaining a narrow run between ROMANI COUNTESS and SHIRANDA passing the 400m.

SPEAKING BAD – Held up rounding the home turn and passing the 350m shifted out, resulting in TRAVISTEE and DASHING SPECIAL being hampered and taken wider.

PRINCE OF ARRAN – Trainer M. Brosnan was fined $200 for failing to declare apprentice A. Patis as rider by the prescribed time. Blundered at the start and lost ground.

BLACKLOG – S. Cormack was reprimanded for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m, being two more than permissible under the rules.

ROMANI COUNTESS – Stewards permitted apprentice A. Thompson to replace J. Bayliss as rider when no senior rider was available at the weight.

Race 8: CANADIAN CLUB OPEN H'CAP – 1050M

COOL SEQUENCE – Raced four wide without cover throughout. Bumped heavily by NICCANOVA near the 300m.

MALVERN ESTATE – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

TULLIO – Struck the side of the gate whilst entering the track. J. Byrne reported that he trotted the horse around at the barriers and it was examined by the veterinary surgeon who passed it fit to race, which jockey Byrne agreed with as the horse felt free in its action. He added that the horse travelled very well throughout the race until placed under pressure upon straightening and did not feel comfortable in its action and it was his view that in hindsight making contact with the gate when entering the track may have had more of a bearing on its performance than he first thought. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a laceration to the inside off fore cannon during running and was sore in the off foreleg. Trainer T. Gollan was advised that TULLIO will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

PAPA JO – Raced three wide with cover.

Race 9: THE VILLAGE KITCHEN ASCOT BENCHMARK 80 H'CAP – 1200M

MADDI ROCKS, which reared over in the mounting yard, resulting in R. Maloney sustaining an injury and being unable to fulfil his engagement, was declared a late scratching at 5:02 pm. Connections were advised that due to its mounting yard manners, MADDI ROCKS must trial prior to racing again. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on MADDI ROCKS be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to 5:02 pm:

30 cents in the dollar for the win #9
21 cents in the dollar for place of winner #9

Continued to overrace in the middle stages. Rider M. Cahill dropped his whip near the 250m.

BRYAN – Leaving the 1000m L. Tarrant rode vigorously to improve to the inside of JARDIN ROUGE, which was racing three wide and being restrained to a position one off the rail, and soon afterwards BRYAN had to be eased from the heels of JARDIN ROUGE and moved in slightly, tightening the room of DRUMBEAT’S CHOICE, which had to be checked. At a subsequent inquiry stewards were of the opinion that both runners were attempting to obtain the same position one off the rail and as a result took no further action.

ALL IMPORTANT – B. Stewart was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m, being one more than permissible under the rules.

KYLEASE – Slow to begin and shortly after the start was steadied off the heels of ALL IMPORTANT.
