On Wednesday 6 March 2019 stewards inquired into the reason why B. Thornton was booked to ride both SUILVEN and FRANCISCA in Race 5 today. After taking evidence from B. Thornton, trainer B. Dais and trainer S. O’Dea, stewards were of the view that B. Thornton was booked to ride FRANCISCA prior to any arrangement with B. Dais to ride SUILVEN. Subsequently, stewards ruled that B. Thornton ride FRANCISCA and Mr Dais was to find a replacement rider for SUILVEN.

After viewing the stewards’ patrol footage, R. Maloney, the rider of MULLAGHMORE, placed 2nd by the Judge, lodged an objection against ROCKNAVAR being declared the winner, alleging interference inside the final 200m. After evidence was taken from all parties and the videos had been viewed, it was established that MULLAGHMORE laid outwards in the early part of the straight and near the 200m laid outwards slightly, resulting in ROCKNAVAR making contact with the hind quarters of MULLAGHMORE, with that gelding being turned outwards and carrying ROCKNAVAR wider on the track. These two horses again made slight contact shortly after passing the 100m. After taking into account the degree of the interference and that MULLAGHMORE had contributed to the interference, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that the placings should be reversed and therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the numbers semaphored.

ALPINE DANCER – Eased from the wide barrier shortly after the start and taken back in an attempt to obtain a position closer to the rail. Trainer R. Heathcote advised stewards that a post-race endoscopic examination revealed that the gelding had a wind issue that will require surgical intervention.

DAWSON DIVA – Slow to begin.

MULLAGHMORE – Laid outwards in the early part of the straight and approaching the 200m was turned outwards after being bumped on the hind quarters when laying out marginally and making contact with ROCKNAVAR. Momentarily brushed with ROCKNAVAR shortly after passing the 100m.
