Race 1: WWW.BRC.COM.AU MAIDEN H'CAP – 1600M

MUFASTA – Tightened on jumping. Settled in a trailing position one wide in the early stages and after passing the 1200m, when the pace steadied, commenced to overrace and was shifted wider on the track to avoid heels and then continued to overrace for a considerable distance thereafter. Bumped on the hind quarters approaching the 800m.

LEBRON – Tightened on jumping. Overraced in the early stages. Raced keenly due to the slow tempo passing the 800m and had to be restrained from heels.

CONSTRUE – Unable to obtain cover passing the 1200m due to the slow speed and when being restrained got its head up for a short distance before obtaining cover after passing the 900m. When asked to explain the performance, jockey B. Shinn stated that the filly raced keenly in the early stages due to the slow tempo which in his opinion may have been to its disadvantage, and when asked to finish the race off, let down for a short distance, however may have peaked on its run prior to the line. He added that in his opinion the filly, which was first up today, would benefit from the run. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

TANTALUS – Slow to begin. Overraced in the early stages. Due to the slow tempo approaching the 800m, was inclined to lay out when being restrained and had to be steadied away from heels and in doing so bumped MUFASTA on the hind quarters.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have sustained an injury to the near fore sesamoid and was treated by the on-course veterinarian and bandaged prior to leaving the track. Trainer K. Johnston was advised that the filly will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Shinn explained that the gelding travelled reasonably well throughout in a favourable position and when asked for an effort in the home straight proved disappointing. Trainer T. Gollan advised that in light of today’s performance he will consider starting the gelding in races of easier class than that of today’s event and have it ridden in a more positive manner.

SURPRISE BULLET – Trainer B. Lockwood advised that the gelding would be ridden in a forward position if circumstances permit. Proved very difficult to load. Trainer B. Lockwood was advised that the gelding would be required to trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again. After being moderately away from the wide barrier the horse raced in a rearward position. Inclined to lay in when attempting to shift wider on the track passing the 300m and became awkwardly placed at the heels of SAWTELL. B. Stewart was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.

DIAMONDS ARE – Trainer M. Costa advised that from the good barrier it would be the intention to have the gelding ridden in a forward position. Jockey M. McGillivray explained that it was his intention to ride the gelding forward as instructed but was unable to muster sufficient speed to do so and after being crossed by runners drawn to his outside, the gelding settled further back than he would have preferred.
