Race 1 – TAB Class 1 Handicap – 1300m

Cavalli – Slow to begin. When questioned as to his riding rounding the home turn jockey B. Thornton stated that leaving the 500m he was reluctant to shift wider on the track to follow Spirit Of Cherokee as he was concerned it was not going to take him into the race, given its racing manners during the early and middle stages. Jockey Thornton elected to follow Dramatic Moments into the race and as a result was held up on the heels of that runner in the early stages of the home straight. Jockey Thornton further added that upon straightening he was positioned to the inside of the heels of Heza Good Boy and as such was unable to avail himself for a run to the outside of that runner without steadying and losing ground at that point. Stewards accepted the explanation.

Heza Good Boy – Slow to begin. Bumped near the 500m.

Northern Dragon – Leaving the 500m shifted out to improve and bumped Heza Good Boy.

Spirit Of Cherokee – When questioned as to the performance jockey A. Allen stated he was instructed to obtain a position with cover. Jockey Allen added that when the pace of the race slackened passing the 900m the gelding commenced to overrace and continued to do so for some distance thereafter. Following which the gelding failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure leaving the 500m and proved disappointing. Jockey Allen was of the opinion that the gelding’s racing manners in the early stages of the event contributed to the disappointing performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Jockey A. Spinks (Dramatic Moments) was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.

Race 2 – TAB Maiden Plate – 900m

After leaving the parade enclosure Arzu refused to proceed to the barriers and was subsequently declared a late scratching by order of Stewards at 12.37 p.m..
