Race Day Stewards Report

Aquis Thoroughbreds

Date: 17 August 2019

Track: Good 4

Weather: Fine

Rail: Out 7m 1400-W/Post, 4.5m Remainder

Penetrometer: 4.57

Stewards Panel: P. Zimmermann (Chairman), K. Daly, G. Lane, P. Reardon

Officials: DrA. Murdoch (Veterinarian), J. Robinson (Clerk of Scales), S. McMahon (Judge), K. Watson (Starter), K. Kilpatrick (Swab Official), S. Rolls (Secretary)

Race 1 – TAB Class 4 Handicap – 1200m

RULER – Overraced in the middle stages. Forced wider rounding the home turn when CONQUER THE STARS shifted wider on the track at that point of the race. Inclined to lay in when placed under pressure over the final 300m.

CONQUER THE STARS – Stewards questioned App S. Tomlinson regarding the riding tactics adopted in particular when racing outside the leader approaching the home turn where the gelding shifted wider on the course forcing RULER, which was racing to its outside, also wider. In doing so this afforded racing room to the inside of CONQUER THE STARS. App Tomlinson stated the instructions were to lead or settle outside the leader and be mindful of the fact that the gelding performed best previously when racing to the outside of other runners. The riding instructions were confirmed by trainer C. Cousins who also indicated that he had supported the gelding today and was satisfied with App Tomlinson’s ride. Stewards in considering App Tomlinson’s ride in the presence of senior rider C. Whiteley, were mindful of his inexperience and that the majority of his rides had been in the country however, App Tomlinson may have erred in the tactics adopted approaching the turn. Stewards intend to refer App Tomlinson and this particular ride to the RQ Training Department for further tuition and direction.

Jockey J. Watkins (RULER) was fined $100 for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.

UNUSUAL BOY – Raced three wide throughout.

MISS SCENIC RIM – A post race veterinary of the mare, which pulled up shortly after passing the winning post, determined it had sustained an injury to the off fore tendon and was treated on course. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance will be required prior to the mare racing again.

Race 4 – CON-X-ION Maiden Plate – 1100m

PRINCE DUPORTH – Began awkwardly making contact with the barrier partition. Raced three wide for the majority. Inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 250m.

PRINCESS ARABELLA – A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare had bled from one nostril during the event and had sustained lacerations to its near fore leg. Trainer L. Kelly was advised that the mare must complete a 1000m gallop in the presence of a Steward prior to racing again.

DREAM SERENADE – Momentarily steadied from the heels of LADY APPLETON near the 80m.

Race 8 – OAKS HOTELS, RESORTS & SUITES C, G & E Class 1 Plate – 1300m

OUT FOR JUSTICE was declared a late scratching at 1.06 p.m. by order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice. Trainer J. Pritchard was advised that the gelding will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

MONT MONT – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Stewards after reviewing the start of the race and in the presence of  Trainer K. Stabe, Jockey J. Woodhouse and Starter K. Watson, determined that MONT MONT had started from an incorrect barrier. It was established that MONT MONT, which had drawn the widest barrier, being barrier 10 in fact started from barrier 11, which had a vacant stall to its inside. Trainer Stabe and Stewards were satisfied, notwithstanding the horse starting one barrier wider than it should have, had not had its chances materially affected. When questioned as to why MONT MONT had started from its incorrect gate Jockey Woodhouse stated he was directed by barrier staff to proceed into barrier 11. Stewards after considering the incident in its entirety intend to review the starting procedures to prevent a reoccurrence.
