Schweida and after beginning well and being able to cross runners to his inside without any pressure he obtained the lead and was able to dictate the speed without being challenged. Stewards accepted his explanation.

Race 2: SCHWEPPES QTIS 3YO BenchMark 65 Handicap – 1710m

JOYMAKER – Began very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly losing significant ground.  Passing the 1300m, when the pace slackened, was shifted three wide and allowed to stride forward to obtain the lead after passing the 1200m.  After obtaining the lead passing the 1200m was steadied by its rider and commenced to overrace.  After passing the 600m had a tendency to lay out when being restrained and continued to hang out for the remainder of the event.

LOTUS LEAF – Near the 1000m was taken wider after being bumped by ADVANCE WARNING, which shifted out.  As a consequence then had to be eased to obtain cover behind ADVANCE WARNING.

JUST AS LOYAL – Slow to begin.

SIENNA ROSE – Began awkwardly and lost some ground.  When questioned regarding the tactics adopted App J. Guthmann-Chester explained that the filly settled in a rearward position, which is consistent with her normal racing pattern.  App Guthmann-Chester stated that after passing  the 500m when the pace quickened the filly was left flatfooted.  App Guthmann-Chester further added that in his opinion when the pace quickened, racing in between horses and not having a lot of room and today’s track conditions may have contributed to the filly hitting a flat spot and being unable to quicken between the 500m and 300m but finished the race off well over the final 200m.  Stewards accepted his explanation.

MAKES YOU THINK – The near side winker became detached passing the 700m.  When asked to comment on the tactics App J. Guthmann-Chester explained that the instructions were from the wide barrier to be neutral and ride the gelding in a rearward position to give it a chance to finish the race off.  App Guthmann-Chester stated that even though it was a small field he was of the opinion that the gelding was unable to make up the amount of ground over the final stages due to today’s track conditions.  When questioned trainer S. O’Dea confirmed the instructions given to App Guthmann-Chester as the gelding had previously failed to finish off its races when ridden in a forward position.  Mr O’Dea was fined $300 under AR135A for failing to notify Stewards of the change of tactics.
