The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow stewards, J. Lloyd, the rider of KID FLASH, the starter, and the horse’s connections, to view the patrol footage of the start of the race to determine whether KID FLASH had been afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from all parties and reviewing the video it was established that just prior to the start being effected the horse had turned its head into the vacant adjoining stall, resulting in the horse not jumping with the rest of the field and taking no part in the event. Stewards were satisfied that as the horse’s head was in the adjoining stall prior to and at the time the start was effected, it had been denied a fair start and therefore, acting under the provisions under AR204(1)(c), declared KID FLASH a non-starter. On the announcement of correct weight stewards ordered that all monies invested on KID FLASH be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to the start of the race.

Mr Hill added that the gelding had always shown ability in previous campaigns but had proved disappointing in some of its runs, however, after performing well in its recent trial, when ridden by apprentice Hodge, he was optimistic that the gelding may be competitive today and suited by the apprentice rider and he expected a forward showing. Stewards accepted his explanation.
