GENERAL

Trainer P O’Toole pleaded to guilty to a charge under AR165(1) in that he had failed to present BALIUS on course by the prescribed time. He was subsequently fined $400 with $200 of that fine suspended for a period of two years, providing he does not breach this rule again in that period. When assessing penalty, Stewards took into account that BALIUS was presented 27 mins late on course for an event that required the runner to be on course by an hour and a half. A swab sample was also taken from BALIUS.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the reasons why three runners from Trainer P O’Toole’s stables were signed in as present on the official sign in sheet, when those runners had to yet to arrive on course. After taking initial evidence from Trainer P O’Toole and his staff, the inquiry was adjourned to a time and date to be fixed to allow Stewards to examine further evidence.

Red Satin – In the vicinity of the 200m commenced to hang in despite the efforts of its rider.

Buster Moon – In the vicinity of the 200m, became awkwardly placed on the heels of RED SATIN, who hung in despite the efforts of its rider. When questioned regarding BUSTER MOON racing more forward, jockey S Wiseman explained that it wasn’t her intention to race closer to the speed, but after TABATHA MISS didn’t show the expected pace, she elected to make use of her position rather than be trapped wide. Stewards noted the explanation.

Diamond Account – Slow to begin and made contact with MASTER OF THE TURF shortly after.

Tabatha Miss – When questioned regarding the poor performance, jockey A Ross stated that TABATHA MISS never felt comfortable during the event, resented the dust and raced erratically in the early stages. She added when placing TABATHA MISS under pressure, she failed to respond and proved disappointing from that point on. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Trainer A Clark concurred with the instructions given to A Butler and further added that in previous starts, intentions were to be more forward, but circumstances forced CENTAUR to race further back than intended. He further added that CENTAUR had raced closer to the speed this preparation and would still intend on implementing that racing pattern for future starts. Stewards noted the explanation. Race 3: GARRY & DESLEY BALLARD TRANSPORT BENCHMARK 60 Handicap 1000m

An inquiry was opened into the reasons why Apprentice D McGillivray only claimed 1 ½ of his 2 kilo allowance and wasn’t replaced by the available apprentices. After taking evidence from Apprentice McGillivray and trainer M Oates who was representing him, it was determined that Apprentice McGillivray failed to get confirmation from the Clerk of Scales that he had correctly claimed his full allowance. As Stewards were only notified by club officials of the discrepancy as runners were being mounted up for the race, Stewards permitted Apprentice McGillivray to take his mount. Subsequently Apprentice McGillivray was fined a sum of $300 under AR143(14)(a) and advised to ensure he gains confirmation from the Clerk of Scales when claiming in the future. Stewards will also seek clarification from the Longreach Jockey Club into the protocols and requirements of club officials regarding all weight discrepancies needing to be instantly brought to the attention of Stewards.
