GENERAL

As T. Williams was ill and P. Hammersley was injured, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: iSTYLE TV BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1400M

On return to scale M. McGillivray, the rider of ALL THAT IS, made an application to have his mount declared a non-runner. After viewing the video footage it was established that as the barriers were activated the horse reared and lost significant ground as a result. In the circumstances, stewards were satisfied that, other than for its own actions, the horse was afforded a fair start.

REALLY REILLY – Inconvenienced on jumping.

DRUMBEAT’S CHOICE – Slow to begin.

GENERAL COS – Raced wide without cover.

CONTRALTO – Raced wide throughout.

SNAPCHAT GIRL – Jumped away awkwardly, making heavy contact with another runner.

Race 2: GLOVERS CONCRETING BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 1400M

Trainer P. Jenkins was fined $100 for failing to present MANA on course by the prescribed time.

MANA – Apprentice S. Lacy reported that her mount had travelled well, however when asked for an effort did not respond, which she felt could be attributed to failing to handle the heavy racing surface. The veterinary surgeon reported that the horse was suffering thumps post-race, which may have explained the horse’s poor performance.

VICTORY EIGHT – Overraced when the pace slackened passing the 1200m.

MYSTICAL RENEGADE – Overraced at heels during the early stages. Obliged to race in restricted room and had to be steadied near the 300m.

CADOGAN – J. Orman reported that whilst he had been instructed to ride in a forward position, it had not been his intention to lead, however with no early speed and after being caught wide in the early stages he allowed his mount to stride forward to obtain the lead passing the 1000m.

GODZONE GIRL – Overraced when the pace slackened in the early stages.

Race 3: SUMMERVELD RACING STABLES BENCHMARK 85 H’CAP – 1600M

SABKHAT – Lost the off hind plate in running.

ZAMEX – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

ROSIE POSIE – Raced wide without cover whilst overracing in the early stages. Stewards questioned apprentice G. Goldsbury regarding her riding of the horse. Stewards raised concerns that when the pace in the early stages of the race was only steady, whether there had been opportunity for her to allow the mare to stride forward in an attempt to obtain the lead rather than have the horse overrace whilst in a three wide position. Apprentice Goldsbury indicated that she was of the opinion that the track surface away from the fence was superior to racing on the fence and she was therefore content to race wide. She added that she did not feel that the overracing was having a detrimental effect on the horse’s performance. Stewards accepted apprentice Goldsbury’s explanation, however advised her that in similar circumstances she would be better served revising her race tactics to suit the pace of the race.

NATURAL BLACK – Raced wide without cover.

Race 4: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS BRUCE MCLACHLAN CLASSIC QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 1200M

THE FIRE TRAP – Connections advised that it would be the intention to have the horse ridden forward from the wide barrier. The horse was ridden accordingly.

TIPPING – Apprentice J. Murphy dropped his whip near the 100m. Apprentice J. Murphy reported that in his opinion his mount was not entirely comfortable on the rain-affected surface.

MILLY WILL PARTY – Slow to begin. Steadied when placed in restricted room after passing the 400m.

SHOW DECK – Slow to begin.

WINTER PASSAGE – R. Stewart reported that his mount overraced during the early stages before obtaining cover near the 1000m.

Race 5: YALUMBA WINES WINTER PROVINCIAL SPRINTERS SERIES (FINAL) BM 80 H’CAP – 1200M

After viewing the stewards’ patrol footage, R. Stewart, the rider of ROCKY SUPREME, placed 2nd by the Judge, lodged an objection against SUPER SUAVE (B. Stewart) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the videos, it was established that although SUPER SUAVE did shift out leaving the 50m and brush ROCKY SUPREME, taking that runner slightly off its line, the extent of the interference did not have a material effect on the finishing position of ROCKY SUPREME, and noting the proximity of the interference to the winning post, stewards dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.

During the preliminary, rider M. Du Plessis believed that UTHRED may have broken down after it had blundered and would not weight-bear on its off foreleg. UTHRED was then declared a late scratching at 2:32 pm by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. A post-race examination of the horse by the veterinary surgeon revealed no significant abnormalities, however trainer T. Button was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the horse’s next start.

On the announcement of correct weight, stewards ordered that all monies invested on UTHRED be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers placed prior to scratching time:

10 cents in the dollar for the win #9
10 cents in the dollar for place of winner #9
10 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #13
8 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #17

ALASSAK – Raced wide without cover. Tightened for room and had to be steadied near the 250m to avoid heels.

SUPER SUAVE – Shifted out to improve near the 250m and in doing so inconvenienced runners to the outside. Rider B. Stewart was reprimanded for this incident.

RISING STOCK – Kicked by another runner in the enclosure, inspected by the veterinary surgeon, underwent a further veterinary examination behind the barriers and was passed fit to race. Trainer G. Duncan was reprimanded for being negligent in saddling in that he presented the horse to the enclosure without a surcingle.

SISTER PATTI – Became unbalanced when bumped by another runner near the 400m. Again bumped near the 350m and then was obliged to steady when placed in restricted room near the 250m.

ROCKY SUPREME – Shifted in slightly when bumped on the hind quarters near the 300m, forcing its rider to straighten his mount.

SEAWAY – Obliged to race in restricted room passing the 800m. Placed in restricted room whilst weakening over the concluding stages and had to be steadied. When asked to comment on the horse’s performance, G. Colless indicated that after enjoying a favourable run throughout the event and travelling strongly, the horse was presented with a clear run in the early stages of the home straight and then when asked for a response, proved disappointing and whilst inconvenienced over the concluding stages was in his opinion disappointing in the run to the line.

MAGNUFIGHTER – Obliged to race in restricted room approaching the 1200m.
