Race 3: Hy-Tec Industries Benchmark 75 H’cap  - 1200m

VICTORY EIGHT – Slow to begin.

PREPEE – Stable representative Mr A. Homan was questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance. He indicated that the stable had expected a forward showing in today’s event, adding the mare had had a brief spell after performing poorly in Townsville on 21 July, which he believed could be attributed to the horse not travelling well in the trip to Townsville.  He indicated prior to this, the  horse’s form had been good and stated that at Doomben on 7 July the horse had worked hard when ridden forward to obtain the lead in the early stages from a wide barrier. Stewards accepted the explanation.

SPUR LE JOUER – Apprentice J. Murphy was fined $100 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

Race 4: Grambower Concrete Pumping Maiden H’cap – 1200m

DUKE OF CLEVELAND: As D. Smith was dually engaged on Duke Of Cleveland and Pinch Legend, B. Pengelly was substituted as the rider of Duke Of Cleveland. Stewards accepted the explanation  for the dual engagement.

The start was delayed when ELLE OF A RUN proved difficult to load, and then was further delayed when MILITARY STRIKER  became fractious in the barriers and had to undergo a veterinary examination before being cleared to start.

STRAWBERRY BLONDE – Stewards accepted the explanation for the late declaration of M. Du Plessis. Overraced in the early stages.  Jockey M. Du Plessis was  reprimanded for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.  In assessing penalty, stewards took into account his record regarding breaches of this rule.

PINCH LEGEND – Change of tactics. Connections advised that the horse would be ridden back in the field from the wide alley. Subsequently the horse was ridden accordingly in the second half of the field, however was unable to obtain cover and raced 3 wide as a result.  Stewards questioned jockey D. Smith regarding the tactics he adopted from the 600m. Of particular concern to stewards was that he, after having been positioned 3 wide and trailing WITHERING, rather than electing to  follow that horse after passing the 500m he stayed closer to the fence, which resulted in him having to alter course when disappointed for a run inside of ALLEGRO near the 300m.  Jockey Smith explained  that when leaving the 500m he did not feel the horse was travelling well enough to improve on the back of WITHERING  and for this reason he did not shift wider on the track. He indicated that his mount did not quicken into a run which was presented approaching the 300m and as a result he was disappointed for that run and was obliged to alter course. He stated that the horse only found the line fairly and was not of the opinion his decision to stay to the inside had any material effect on the horse’s overall position in the event. Stewards agreed that the tactic had not altered the finishing position of PINCH LEGEND, however advised jockey Smith that in similar circumstances he would be better served shifting wider, which would have afforded the horse an uninterrupted run to the line.

MILITARY STRIKER – Slow to begin. When the pace slackened near the 700m had to be restrained from heels.

ELLE OF A RUN – Slow to begin. When the pace slackened near the 700m had to be restrained from heels.

ROYAL YACHT – Overraced for a short distance approaching the 700m and was steadied from heels at that point.

WITHERING – Resented being restrained for a short distance passing the 900m, racing with its head in the air.

Race 5: Equity Concreting Solutions Class 2 H’cap – 1200m

The start was delayed when apprentice BARNEY lost its near-side front shoe in the enclosure and had to be replated behind the barriers.

STAR SILK – Trainer C. Anderson was reprimanded for failing to produce the Document of Description for the horse. Slow to begin.  Apprentice J. Murphy reported that it was not his intention to ride his mount closer to the lead, however after beginning poorly was obliged to settle in the second half of the field.

MISTER SPINKS – Jockey M. McGillivray reported his mount laid out throughout the event. Inconvenienced over the concluding stages.

STANLEY PARK - Jockey R. Maloney reported his mount laid out throughout the event, and over the concluding stages laid out significantly, causing him to stop riding.

Race 6: Harmer Concreting Class 1 H’cap – 1000m

The starting time for this race was rescheduled to 3.40 pm.

SOME COLLECT – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with another runner. Jockey D. Browne, rider of TAKES TIME, pleaded guilty  to a charge of careless riding, in that he directed his mount  out to secure clear running to the outside of IMA FARMBOY when not sufficiently clear of SOME COLLECT, forcing that horse out, and resulting in SOME COLLECT clipping heels and blundering.  Jockey Browne was suspended from riding in races for a period of 15 days, to commence at midnight, 14 October and to expire at midnight, 29 October. A post race veterinary examination revealed a small laceration to the off fore leg.

IMA FARMBOY – Bumped by another runner on jumping away.

TAKES TIME – Laid in under pressure from the 200m, causing its rider to stop riding and straighten.

MISS LATERATI – Raced 3 wide throughout with cover.

Race 7: Dunemann Constructions Class 4 H’cap – 1600m

The starting time for this race was rescheduled to 4.15 pm.

MYMMING – Slow to begin.

NASHVILLE SKYLINE – Between the 1000m and 900m was placed in tight running inside MYSTERIUM, which had been directed in by its rider.  Whist NASHVILLE SKYLINE did not lose significant ground in this incident, the horse  did receive tightening for an extended period and due to this, stewards felt that jockey Spinks, rider of MYSTERIUM, had ridden in a careless manner and issued him with a reprimand for his actions.  Held up for clear running from the 400m until approaching the 100m.

ROMAN DOLL – Lost ground when under pressure leaving the 600m.  Jockey Cassidy reported at this stage of the race the horse may have resented racing amongst horses and was under pressure to hold its position He added however that his mount responded to his riding after leaving the 400m and had difficulty securing clear running between the 300m and 200m.

MISS SEVERINA – Inconvenienced approaching the 400m and was obliged to shift out to avoid the heels of SHELTER LADY.

COONOWRIN RUBY – When steadied near the 800m commenced to hang out and shift wider on the track, inconveniencing  another runner. Then continued to hang out until entering the home straight.

IDALIA’S DREAM – Raced 3 wide without cover  for the majority of the event.
