Race 5: Butler McDermott Lawyers Benchmark 85 H’cap – 1000m

THE MECHANIC – Became fractious in the barriers before missing the start. Connections were advised that a warning will be placed on the gelding’s barrier manners.  Checked from heels approaching the 600m as a result of the pace slackening. Stewards questioned jockey R. Maloney regarding his riding of the horse during the middle stages, where it appeared after having to check from heels he lost more ground than was necessary when approaching the 500m.  He indicated that as he had to significantly restrain his mount near the 600m this resulted in him losing his position behind BERAHT.  That position was further tightened when MONACO PLAYBOY, which was racing to the outside, shifted in slightly, and his mount also shifted in of its own accord whilst being restrained. He added that, in his opinion, the pace of the race at that point quickened and he was left slightly flatfooted. He added that ultimately he did not feel that he had been obliged to be held up for clear running and was able to secure running in the home straight. Jockey Maloney further added that being obliged to check near the 600m, in his opinion, had significantly affected the horse’s chances. Stewards were satisfied that after having to check, jockey Maloney’s actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances and took no further action.

MONACO PLAYBOY – Slow to begin.

BERAHT – Became awkward at heels and had to be steadied when the pace slackened near the 800.

DIVINE SERVICE – Raced wide without cover.

Stewart indicated that after beginning only fairly and riding his mount forward he was obliged to race 3 wide, and stated he had given consideration to placing more pressure on his mount in an attempt to race forward and cross to the lead, however he did not feel the mare was travelling well enough to do so, indicating that BIMINI ROAD did not travel well throughout the event. His opinion overall was the horse  proved disappointing.  Stewards will interview trainer Mr R. Heathcote in the coming days in relation to the horse’s performance.
