Race 1: Townsville Bulletin QTIS 2yo & 3yo Maiden H’cap – 1000m
INSTINCTION LASS – Slow to begin.
LOVE IS BLIND – Hampered near the 250m. Had to be checked and shift out and alter course near the 150m when inconvenienced by another runner which shifted in under pressure.
HIBACHI MISS – Leaving the 250m commenced to shift in under pressure inconveniencing another runner and continued to do so causing another runner to checked and alter course near the 150m. Rider N. Day was reprimanded and advised make a greater effort in keeping his mount straight in similar circumstances.
KISS ME LATER – Raced greenly. Shifted out near the 200m, inconveniencing another runner. Whilst stewards noted the racing manners of the horse, rider J. Felix was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.
IDLE JACK – Inconvenienced near the 200m by another runner which shifted out and forced wider on the track.
DUTCH ROCKET – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
BLACK SAGA – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
CLAIRVUE SAGA – Shifted out on jumping forcing another runner wider. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
HEY PAL – Was forced wider on jumping by another runner which shifted out. Raced ungenerously in the middle stages and raced wide for the majority of the race.
On return to scale, a protest was lodged by jockey W. D’Avila, rider of 2nd placegetter, LOVE IS BLIND, against HIBACHI MISS (N. Day) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 150m. After hearing evidence and viewing the official film, Stewards upheld the objection and correct weight was declared on the Judge’s numbers: No. 6 – Love Is Blind No.15 – Hibachi Miss No. 3 – Mount Costa – No. 5 – Kiss Me Later.
Race 2: Hygain Maiden Plate – 1200m
FLAMING LAMBORGINI – Slow to begin. Laid out and shifted wider in the home straight. Connections were advised that its nomination would be refused at TAB meetings until its form improved by way of country racing.
CHEERS FOR CHARLIE – Commenced to lose ground leaving the 800m and finished tailed off. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Connections were advised that its nomination would be refused at TAB meetings until it showed form improvement by way of country meetings.
STAR BANNER – Raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages.
CORTESTA – Began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping another runner.
CANFORD TREE – Bumped by another runner on jumping.
BORROMEO – Slow to begin. Laid out rounding the home turn. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
SWEET JUNE – Correct weight was delayed when rider Ms A. Thomson, rider of the 2nd placegetter, wished to view the film to ascertain if she had grounds to lodge an objection against the winner, WRITTEN IMAGE. After viewing the film Ms Thomson did not wish to proceed. Hampered near the 100m by another runner, which shifted out and was steadied.
ZULU TUK – Shifted out under pressure near the 100m, hampering another runner. Rider C. Whiteley was advised to show greater care when his horses shift ground.
ILCALLYA – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
EXELANT MOSH – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
Race 3: Success North Queensland Benchmark 60 H’cap – 1200m
OUR RECIPE – Fractious in the barriers prior to the start. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
TESTATIME – Slow to begin.
PRICKLES – Had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the home straight.
MERCURY BULLET – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
Race 4: Hunting House Benchmark 69 H’cap – 1400m
MALIZA – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
FASTCAR – Began awkwardly.
LORD ARCHER – Forced inwards approaching the winning post, bumping another runner on the hindquarters, and then having to be checked.
LUVYA BEAK – Bumped on the hindquarters approaching the winning post and shifted out. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
CENTRO SUPERIOR – Rider W. D’Avila pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a), in that he permitted his mount to shift in under hard riding approaching the winning post when not sufficiently clear of LORD ARCHER, which was taken inwards on to the hind quarters of another runner and had to be checked. Jockey D’Avila’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days, to commence at midnight, 30 July, up to and including midnight, 7 August. In considering penalty, stewards took into account his recent good record and guilty plea.
Race 5: Canadian Club Class 2 Plate – 1000m
CEDAR WOOD – Shifted out and away from another runner near the 800m and in doing so inconvenienced another runner.
SCRIPTS – Hampered by another runner, which shifted out near the 800m, having to be restrained.
FIELDS AVENUE – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
WALK THE TALK – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
SPARKLY STAR – Crowded for room on jumping. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
MAGIC GLOW – Finished tailed off. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Connections were advised that the nomination of the horse would be refused at TAB meetings until such time as its form improved by way of country meetings.
COUNTLESS ROCK – A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be sore in the near fore fetlock. Trainer S. D’Avila, was advised she must obtain a veterinary clearance prior to the horse being permitted to start again.
Race 6: TAB Townsville Guineas QTIS 3yo H’cap – 1609m
SHIRANDA – Slow to begin.
SCOTTISH LAD – Slow to begin.
SHENRON – Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously rounding the home turn and hung out. Raced wide for the majority of the race. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer M. Attard advised stewards he would now following today’s event concentrate on distances shorter than that of today’s race. Mr Attard was nonetheless advised that a warning would be placed on the horse’s poor performance.
MISTER MAGNUSIFENT – Over-raced in the middle stages.
RISING BOOM – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
LAST CHANCE – When questioned into the tactics adopted on the gelding, rider J. Stanley advised stewards it was not his intention to lead as he was looking to gain a forward position with cover, however due to the lack of pace in the race and when going to be caught wide, he elected to allow the horse to stride forward. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 7: Carlton United Breweries Cleveland Bay Open H’cap – 1300m
BARACHIEL – Slow to begin. Shifted out at the 300m, forcing runners wider, and again at the 250m, forcing runners out to its outside. Rider apprentice E. Smith was severely reprimanded and advised to show much greater care in similar circumstances.
SCHERZOSO – Slow to begin. Tightened for room near the 300m and again at the 250m.
KIEVANN – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
FOMO – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
HANOVER SQUARE – Tightened for room and forced wider at the 300m and again near the 250m.
EASY WEEKEND – Inconvenienced near the 300m and again near the 250m.
DREAMS APLENTY – Unable to obtain clear running approaching the 100m, having to be restrained and went to the line without being fully tested.
ATOUCHMORE – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
PALLADIAN – Compounded over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality. Trainer R. Ludwig advised he would have further tests conducted on the horse when returning home and would advise stewards of any matter that comes to his attention.
Race 8: Stockland Townsville Class 1 H’cap – 1400m
VELVET GLOVE – Began awkwardly.
GIVEN TIME – Shifted in on jumping, bumping another runner. Shifted in and bumped another runner near the 200m.
FAIRFACTS – Bumped by another runner on jumping.
LITTLE RED COUPE – Bounded in the air on jumping and lost ground.
PAUA – Bumped by another runner near the 200m. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
MICHELIN FIVE STAR – Bumped by another runner near the 200m. Raced wide for the majority of the race.
AGILITY – Raced wide for the majority of the race.
