GENERAL

Due to some rainfall after the scratching deadline, Stewards downgraded the track from a Soft 5 to a Soft 7 at 2.00pm.

As Apprentice C. Bayliss was not attending the meeting today due to illness, riding replacements were made in Races 5 and 6 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Apprentice Bayliss will require a medical clearance prior to resuming riding.

Race 1: WHOLESALE HORSEWEAR HOUSE CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1210M

BETTER THAN MAGIC – Connections advised that the gelding would be ridden further back in the field today if circumstances permit. The gelding was ridden accordingly. Raced wide without cover throughout.

REFLECTIVE – Raced keenly for a short distance approaching the 800m.

WOTS WONG – Bumped on jumping.

I’MTWENTYFOURSEVEN – Momentarily held up rounding the home turn. Laid in in the home straight.

MISS HOW LONG – Slow to begin.

BUSH SHINDIG – Began awkwardly.

ALL ELLIE – Began awkwardly and bumped a runner to its inside.

HEART VANDELAY – Trainer J. Edwards was fined $300 for the late scratching of the gelding at 8.31am. In determining penalty, Stewards were mindful that Mr. Edwards’ actions had cost another runner a run.

Race 2: MITAVITE BENCHMARK 58 H’CAP – 1640M

MILITARY KINGS – Brushed the running rail approaching the 150m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding was suffering from the thumps and exhibited a poor post-race recovery. The trainer’s representative, Mr. S. Clarke, was advised that the gelding will require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.

TONY’S DECREE – Raced 3 wide without cover in the early stages before settling in a position one off the fence approaching the 800m.

RISING KING – Began awkwardly.

BROOKER AVENUE – Made contact with the running rail approaching the 900m. When asked to comment on the seemingly disappointing performance, jockey M. Hellyer advised that, after beginning well, the mare settled in a midfield position and failed to respond to hard riding throughout. He added that, in his opinion, the gelding would be better suited over shorter distances than that of today’s race for its future starts. Stewards will follow-up with trainer J. Phillips in the coming days regarding the disappointing performance.

Race 3: CALTEX RATINGS BAND 0-58 H’CAP – 1300M

Trainer W. Morriss, trainer B. Hull and trainer A. Plumb were each issued with a reprimand due to their runners being presented on course later than the prescribed time. As a result, a pre-race swab sample was taken from each of those runners, being PAT’S GIRL, QUEEN OF MANHATTAN and SAN PIERRE.

ABITOFACARD – Raced in restricted room and had to be restrained for a short distance approaching the 850m.

BILL OF RIGHTS – Raced keenly leaving the 1000m, and was steadied from heels for a short distance near the 900m. When asked to comment on the seemingly disappointing performance,  jockey N. Tomizawa advised that, after beginning well, his mount commenced to overrace in the early stages and failed to settle in the run and, in his opinion, proved disappointing over the concluding stages. The stable representative reported that the horse is better suited when able to race on the pace. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.

GOT NO DOUBT – Held up rounding the home turn.

LOVE FLIES – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.

TYRIAN – Jockey M. Crawford was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

The track was upgraded from a Soft 7 to a Soft 6 retrospective to include the running of Race 3.

Race 4: AUDI CENTRE TOOWOOMBA RATINGS BAND 0-58 H’CAP – 1300M

GRANDIOSO – Apprentice N. Fazackerley reported that, after beginning well, his mount settled in a rearward position and failed to respond to hard riding which, in his opinion, could be attributed to today’s soft racing surface. When questioned by Stewards regarding the disappointing  performance of the gelding, which drifted noticeably in betting, the trainer’s representative, Mr. S. Clarke, advised that the stable was not disappointed with the gelding’s run today and believed that it had finished the race off strongly. Mr. Clarke did however advise that the gelding has failed to handle soft racing surfaces on a number of previous occasions. Stewards noted the explanations. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Race 5: VANDERFIELD JOHN DEERE BENCHMARK 60 H’CAP – 2175M

POOLENZO – Raced keenly in the early stages.

LAMMA HILTON – Began awkwardly.

RED MONKEY – After being crossed near the winning post on the first occasion, shifted out to avoid heels whilst racing keenly.

BRUMBY JACK – Slow to begin. Jockey A. Sewell was fined $400 under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m.

GET OUTA UTAH – Steadied whilst being restrained in an endeavour to obtain a position with cover near the 1800m. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages before racing in a 4 wide position from the 800m. Jockey K. Yoshida was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m.

SCHWARZY – Slow into stride. Jockey J. Lyon was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

ETHANOL GIRL – Apprentice A. Thompson was reprimanded under AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m.

Race 6: TAB LONG MAY WE PLAY MAIDEN PLATE – 1110M

ENRAGED – Bumped heavily on jumping.

KNUCKLEBOX – Began awkwardly and made heavy contact with a runner to its inside.

PRINCESS CLEOPATRA – Steadied from heels for a short distance approaching the 800m. Crowded for room whilst rounding the home turn.

STARLETTO – Laid in whilst rounding the home turn despite the efforts of its rider resulting in PRINCESS CLEOPATRA being crowded for room. Laid in in the home straight despite the efforts of its rider. Apprentice I. Rabjones reported that after putting in an awkward stride leaving the 700m her mount hung in for the remainder of the race. As the mare was unable to be examined by the veterinary surgeon prior to it leaving the course, trainer R. Smith was advised that the mare will require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.

SNIP OF GIN – Raced 4 wide for the majority.

SIR WHITTINGTON – Stewards accepted the explanation provided by Trainer B. Gorman regarding the late scratching of the gelding at 7.40am.

Race 7: MOCO MAIDEN PLATE – 870M

GLOBAL VENTURE – Shifted in under pressure in the home straight.

SAM’S ALLYCAT – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.

IN HAVANA – Slow to begin, and was then slow to muster early speed.

Stewards inquired into an incident approaching the 750m in which WANDERING PRINCESS, ZEBEDABADOO and SHE’S CROWNED were all tightened for room when GLOBAL VENTURE shifted in. In this incident ZEBEDABADOO and WANDERING PRINCESS also lost some ground. Jockey A. Spinks, the rider of GLOBAL VENTURE, subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) in that approaching the 750m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of WANDERING PRINCESS, ZEBEDABADOO and SHE’S CROWNED resulting in those runners being tightened for room and ZEBEDABADOO and WANDERING PRINCESS losing some ground. Jockey Spinks’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 11 days to commence at midnight on Sunday 16 August 2020 and conclude at midnight on Thursday 27 August 2020. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Spinks’ guilty plea and his prior good record in relation to this rule.

Race 8: SEDL AGENCIES QTIS 3YO BENCHMARK 62 H’CAP – 1000M

BATTLE THROUGH – Began awkwardly. Raced wide without cover throughout.

ELEUTHERA – Tightened for room on jumping.

MISHANI APPEAL – Began awkwardly and tightened a runner to its inside.

Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of VINCIT. After taking initial evidence from Apprentice I. Rabjones, the rider of VINCIT, Stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date and time to be fixed to enable them to obtain evidence from trainer M. Currie and to enable Apprentice Rabjones’ master to be present at the inquiry.
