SUPPLEMENTORY REPORT
 
From Toowoomba 17-10 2020
 
Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding BIG GEE falling in Race 5 at the Toowoomba meeting on 17-10-20 approaching the 400m. On that night Stewards took initial evidence off a number of rider’s however adjourned the matter to a time and date to be fixed to allow App. A Thompson the rider of BIG GEE to give evidence at the inquiry.
 
At tonight’s resumed inquiry evidence was taken from App. Thompson and further evidence was taken by Jockey L Tilley (ALIRAAJ).
 
Subsequently Jockey L Tilley was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the terms of AR131(a) in that as the rider of ALIRAAJ he directed his mount inwards approaching the 400m when insufficiently clear of BIG GEE resulting in the runner clipping heels and falling. Jockey L Tilley’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 4 weeks commencing midnight the 21/11/20 and concluding midnight the 19/12/20.
 
Race 1: BARRIER REEF POOLS Class 1 Handicap 1200 metres
 
GRAND BARRAIL- Slow to begin.
 
IN AGREEMENT- Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
I'M CALLIN' DIBS- Momentarily held up rounding the home turn before shifting back to the inside to secure clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
 
STAZZANA- Near the 900m, was momentarily forced to race in restricted room when a runner to its outside laid in. Laid out rounding the home turn and then had a tendency to lay in under pressure in the home straight.
 
FUNKY BEAT- After being slow to begin then failed to muster early speed and lost considerable ground. Jockey J Murphy could offer no explanation for the below market expectation performance of the filly which he advised failed to travel strongly during the event after being slow to begin.
 
HER OPTION- Raced in restricted room and was eased rounding the home turn.
 
SWEET JAIN- Forced wider by another runner near the 800m and raced 3 wide for the remainder.
 
Race 2: KNIGHTS COMMERCIAL LAUNDRY BENCHMARK 62 Handicap 1625 metres
 
CULLINGWORTH- Stewards questioned trainers representative Ms J Williams in respect to the gelding settling further forward in today’s event. Ms Williams advised that the gelding was stepping up in distance for today’s event and further with the addition of blinkers expected the gelding to settle further forward, however was somewhat surprised to see it leading the event. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding which compounded from the 600m revealed no significant abnormalities.
 
WILD MOON- Slow to begin. Steadied when awkwardly placed at heels near the 1400m. Near the 500m improved onto the heels of a tiring runner and was eased.
 
DREAM POLICE- Slow to begin. Had difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight, at the 150m and again near the 50m.
 
SARASUN- After being caught wide in the early stages was allowed to stride forward by its rider to obtain a position outside the leader near the 900m.
 
MYSTIC BROOK- Near the 900m momentarily raced in restricted room when runners either side shifted ground marginally. Leaving the 500m was buffered between runners when losing ground whilst tiring.
 
Race 3: NEIL MANSELL CONCRETE BENCHMARK 70 Handicap 1300 metres
 
PROUD ROC- Slow to begin.
 
TRAIL OF GLORY- Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
LI'L RODGE- Approaching the 900m momentarily raced in restricted room and was eased. Near the 350m was disappointed for a run and eased before shifting to the outside to secure clear running. Jockey J Morris pleaded guilty to a charge under AR132(5) in that he used his whip in an excessive manner during the event. Jockey J Morris’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days, to commence midnight 21/11/20 and to expire midnight 29/11/20.
 
MISS CAVALLO- Began awkwardly and then dipped shortly after the start.
 
HEART OF KINGS- Raced keenly during the early and middle stages.
 
Race 4: SUBZERO AIRCONDITIONING RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 Handicap 1000 metres
 
SECONDOFMAY was declared a late scratching @ 1:05pm on veterinary advice.
 
LOVESON- Raced 3 wide without cover throughout. Following the event Trainer T Lunney expressed concerns to Stewards with respect to the vigour shown by App E Macpherson on the gelding. Subsequently, Stewards interviewed App Macpherson with respect to the matter. App Macpherson advised that due to her relative inexperience as a 3kg apprentice, at this stage her preference is to ride her mounts out in a hands and heels manner rather than using the whip where possible. Ms Macpherson added that in her opinion her mounts respond better to her riding at this time when ridden in this manner. As Stewards were satisfied that the vigour displayed by App Macpherson was consistent with the manner in which she had ridden her mounts out in recent weeks they took the matter no further particularly given App Macpherson’s relative inexperience.
 
SPARTAN JET- Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.
 
AURORA CHARM- Slow to begin. Improved onto heels passing the 500m and was eased.
 
HARD ENOUGH- Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
 
SPIRIT'S FIRST- After being caught wide in the early stages was restrained passing the 800m to obtain a position 3 wide with cover.
 
Race 5: LIVING TURF QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1100 metres
 
MR BROSE- Slow to begin. Leaving the 900m Checked severely to avoid heels. Held up on the heels of tiring runners approaching and rounding the home turn. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
FINGERTIPS- Began awkwardly. Checked severely near the 900m and lost considerable ground. At a subsequent inquiry App A Thompson was found guilty of a change of careless riding under the terms of AR131(a) in that he permitted his mount to shift in near the 900m when insufficiently clear of LONG SHOT LIZZIE resulting in LONG SHOT LIZZIE, HALCYCON DAYS and FINGERTIPS all being severely tightened for room and FINGERTIPS being checked, losing considerable ground and almost dislodging its rider. App A Thompson’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 17 days to commence midnight 23/11/20 and to expire midnight 10/12/20. In considering the matter of penalty stewards determined the incident to be in the high range.
 
ROMANCE FACTOR- Began awkwardly and was then servery tightened shortly after the start and lost ground.
 
HALCYON DAYS- Began awkwardly and was bumped heavily on the hindquarters and became unbalanced. Tightened for room near the 900m.
 
LONGSHOT LIZZIE- Severely tightened for some distance shortly after the start and lost ground. Tightened for room near the 900m.
 
DAZZLING QUEEN- A post-race veterinary examination of the filly which weakened badly in the home straight and performed below market expectations revealed it to be short stepping behind and to also be making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer T Sears advised that in light of tonight performance would now consider the filly’s future in his stable. Nevertheless, Mr Sears was advised that prior to its next start the filly would require a veterinary certificate which includes the results of an endoscopic examination.
 
COOL ESPRESSO- Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
 
CROWN LAW- Bumped heavily on jumping and then raced in restricted room for some distance shortly after the start and lost ground.
 
TOUCH OF BALI- Began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly on jumping. Laid in for some distance passing the 900m.
 
GRAND- Raced wide throughout.
 
Race 6: GERRY BROWN'S SHELVING & STORAGE Maiden Handicap 1850 metres
 
PLATINUM DEAL- Declared a late scratching @ 5:10pm on veterinary advice.
 
The start was delayed due to technical issues with the photo finish. The start time for this event was therfore was amended to 7:55pm.
 
MT MORT SHARK- Shifted wider by its rider to improve leaving the 900m and as a result raced wide for the remainder.
 
RUNARD REDNUT- Began awkwardly. After being caught wide in the early stages App M Savva allowed her mount to stride forward to obtain a position on the rail near the 1100m. Near the 600m steadied when placed in restricted room. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding which performed below the market expectations revealed no significant abnormalities.
 
A'YUN- Raced keenly in the early stages. Near the 1200m whilst racing keenly was steadied when crossed by another runner.
 
CHLOE JADE- Began awkwardly.
 
I KNOW YVES- Tightened for room at the start and lost ground. Improved onto heels approaching the 1300m and shifted wider and then continued to race ungenerously for some distance.
 
TORQUE TO ROMAN- Tightened for room at the start and lost ground. Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
Race 7: FOCUS HR QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1000 metres
 
REBEL LASS- Upon arrival at the barriers was kicked by the clerk of the course horse. Subsequently, underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.
