GENERAL

As jockey Beau-Dene Appo was not attending the meeting today due to personal reasons, a riding replacement was made in Race 8 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

As jockey C. Eaton was unable to arrive on course to fulfil her engagements due to transport difficulties, riding replacements were made in Races 7 and 8 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: MICHAEL NOLAN RACING QTIS 2YO MAIDEN PLATE – 800M

BEAN BAG – Began awkwardly. Steadied from heels on two occasions approaching and passing the 600m. Became awkward rounding the home turn. Shifted out under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice Z. White was reminded of her obligations regarding her use of the whip prior to the 100m.

MY BYE – Laid in in the home straight and proved difficult to ride out.

COFFEE COMING – Stewards permitted Apprentice N. Fazackerley to ride the filly without claiming any of his allowance.

ELKA ELEVEN – Tightened for room on jumping away. Steadied from heels at the 600m. Forced wider on the track by another runner over the concluding stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

PROUDLY GREY – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.

Race 2: CAREY BROS ABBATTOIR BENCHMARK 60 H’CAP – 800M

The start of this race was delayed to enable REAL PATRIOT to be resaddled after being presented to the enclosure with the incorrect saddlecloth. Trainer’s representative L. Sears and Apprentice A. Thompson were both reprimanded for failing to ensure that the horse was presented to the enclosure with the correct saddlecloth.

MIDNIGHT MATINEE – Got its head down on as the start was effected and lost considerable ground. Checked and lost ground when FIRST BID shifted out approaching the 250m.  R. Faehr, the rider of FIRST BID, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 131(a) in that approaching the 250m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of MIDNIGHT MATINEE resulting in that runner having to be checked and losing ground. R. Faehr’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days, to commence at midnight on Sunday 12 January 2020 and expire at midnight on Monday 20 January 2020. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Faehr’s guilty plea and his prior good record in relation to this rule.

KING’S LADY – Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

ASK AUDREY – Reared as the start was effected and lost ground.

MOCKING – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

STAR FACTOR – Tightened for room on jumping away and lost ground.

FIRST BID – Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early stages of the home straight. Jockey R. Faehr accidentally dropped his whip near the 150m.

GYPSY TAP – Bumped heavily on jumping away and lost ground.

Race 3: NORM COX CARPET & VINYL LAYER CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1500M

After viewing the Stewards’ patrol footage, J. Oliver, the rider of ALADINA, placed 4th by the Judge, lodged an objection against EVENING being placed 3rd, alleging interference near the 150m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the available patrol footage, Stewards found that near the 150m ALADINA, after establishing a run to the inside of the heels of EVENING (App. A. Spinks), had to be steadied and shift to the outside to secure clear running when EVENING shifted in when not clear to do so. Given the margin of a neck between runners at the finish, Stewards were of the opinion that had the interference not occurred ALADINA would have finished in front of EVENING. Stewards therefore upheld the protest and amended the placings as follows: 1st PRINCELY SUM, 2nd TOORAK COMEDY, 3rd ALADINA, 4th EVENING. Apprentice A. Spinks was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in the future.

ALADINA – Slow to begin. Improved onto heels and was steadied near the 500m. Steadied when disappointed for a run approaching the 400m.

PRINCELY SUM – Raced 3 wide without cover in the middle stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

TOORAK COMEDY – Laid in for a short distance leaving the 200m.

SPICER – Slow to begin.

EVENING – Improved onto heels and was steadied for a short distance near the 500m.

Race 4: GJ GARDNER HOMES WARWICK/STANTHORPE MAIDEN PLATE – 1500M

BETTER BROTHER – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight, and then shifted in approaching the 200m to secure clear running. Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages. Jockey S. Sweeney reported that her mount was inclined to hang out throughout.

COMPLETE TRUST – Bumped on jumping away. Hung out near the 1200m and again near the 900m.

TYRIAN – Bumped on jumping away.

STEEL MAGNOLIA – Raced wide without cover in the early and middle stages.

YANKEE SANG – Held up for clear running over the final 150m.

MOTAL – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

Race 5: WICKHAM FREIGHT LINES MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M

After viewing the Stewards’ patrol footage, Apprentice M. Kennedy, the rider of LIVE MUSIC, placed 2nd by the Judge, lodged an objection against BARTALUMBA being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, Stewards found that whilst BARTALUMBA (T. Marshall) did shift out under pressure over the concluding stages, making contact with LIVE MUSIC (App. M. Kennedy), simultaneously CHRISTMAS CREEK (App. J. Huxtable), which was racing to the outside, shifted in also making contact with LIVE MUSIC at that point. As Stewards could therefore not be comfortably satisfied that the tightening caused to LIVE MUSIC could be attributable to the actions of any one rider, Stewards therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the Judge’s semaphored numbers. Nevertheless, T. Marshall and Apprentice J. Huxtable were both reprimanded as a result of this incident.

BARTA LINES – Bumped on jumping away.

TERRAJA – Began awkwardly and lost ground, and then steadied from heels shortly after the start.

BARTALUMBA – Raced wide without cover in the early stages.

DE NOVA STELLA – Steadied near the 900m to avoid the heels of CHRISTMAS CREEK which shifted in when not completely clear. Apprentice J. Huxtable, the rider of CHRSTIMAS CREEK, was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances in the future.

JULES RULES – When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance, jockey Andrew Spinks advised that, in his opinion, the mare did not travel strongly at any stage of the race and jarred up on the firm racing surface today. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no apparent abnormalities.

MASSIE WHISPER – Began awkwardly.

MONGELICA – Bumped on jumping away.

Race 6: RURAL WEEKLY OPEN H’CAP – 1350M

SCRABBLE – Began awkwardly. Shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.

VICTORY TOAST – Trainer B. Gorman was fined $100 for the late declaration of K. Yoshida as rider.

MR TICKETS – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight.

LI’L RODGE – Began awkwardly, made contact with the barrier partition and, as a result, almost dislodged its rider. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

CHARLIE CAT – Bounded in the air on jumping away and lost ground. Shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.

WINE BARREL – Laid in approaching the 100m and had to be steadied for a short distance to avoid the heels of LI’L RODGE.

ANGELS LOVE – Jockey H. Phillips reported that her mount was inclined to hang out throughout.

Race 7: BASIL NOLAN JNR MEMORIAL QTIS 3YO CLASS 1 PLATE – 1100M

COMMANDER SARA – Hung out rounding the home turn and shifted wider on the track. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly disappointing performance, jockey J. Oliver advised that, in his opinion, the gelding race greenly throughout and did not travel at any stage of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no apparent abnormalities.

ICED – Improved onto heels and was steadied near the 800m.

POUND FOR POUND – Trainer T. Button pleaded guilty to a charge under AR. 106(1) in that he presented POUND FOR POUND to the mounting yard without the required lead bag which formed part of the horse’s gear. Mr. Button was fined $500.  Bumped heavily on jumping away and became significantly unbalanced and, as a result, lost ground.

BETTY IS READY – Shifted out abruptly on jumping and made heavy contact with another runner.

BOOM OR BUST – Bumped on jumping away. Steadied to avoid heels near the 800m and again near the 700m. Steadied when placed in restricted room near the 50m.

RAKU’S SECRET – Began awkwardly and was then bumped shortly after the start and lost ground.

TARIRO – Momentarily steadied when placed in restricted room near the 800m.

TWERK – Improved onto heels and was steadied near the 100m.

Stewards inquired into an incident approaching the 700m in which BETTY IS READY (App. M. Savva) was placed in restricted room for a short distance when SERTIN (App. N. Fazackerley) shifted in and away from FLYING CRACKERJACK (App. A. Thompson) which was racing to that runner’s outside. As Stewards could not attribute the interference to the actions of any one rider, they elected to take the matter no further other than to report it as a racing incident.

Race 8: GREEN HOMES AUSTRALIA – DARLING DOWNS CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1200M

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards reviewed the patrol footage of the start and noted that the barrier’s containing BRUTUS and SPLASH OF CRISTAL were slow to open. As Stewards were of the opinion that both runners had been denied a fair start they declared BRUTUS and SPLASH OF CRISTAL non-runners. On the announcement of correct weight Stewards ordered that all monies invested on the BRUTUS and SPLASH OF CRISTAL be refunded with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

10 cent in the dollar for the Win #1
8 cent in the dollar for place of winner #1
11 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #3
13 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #6

MOSCINI – Held up from the 600m until straightening.

SHADYVALE STAR – Bumped by another runner upon straightening.

HOMELAND SECURITY – Steadied from heels for a short distance approaching the 900m.

STELLAR JEWEL – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.
