UNO ZOOM - Slow to begin. Whilst racing ungenerously approaching the 800m laid out tightening another runner to the outside. Upon returning to scale jokey R. Goldsbury advised that her mount raced greenly throughout and in her opinion was inclined to hang out. Raced ungenerously over the concluding stages proving difficult to ride out.

PETA CALADA – Began awkwardly. Raced greenly throughout.

HERTZKA – Severely tightened on jumping and lost ground. Approaching the 800m, when racing greenly, was steadied when momentarily placed in restricted room by runners either side and consequently lost ground.

The start of this event was delayed to allow the broadcast of an interstate event.

BESTERS – Slow to begin. Held up momentarily rounding the home turn.

PRINCELY SUM – Slow to begin.

WATCHMEN- Began awkwardly and lost ground and as a consequence settled further back than anticipated. Shifted in under pressure at the 200m. Stewards questioned trainer J. Dann in relation to the improved performance. Mr. Dann advised that it was the intention to ride the gelding with cover today preferably in 3rd or 4th position in an endeavour to have the horse settle during the run. He added that he was surprised to see the gelding positioned as far back in the field, however noted that the horse began awkwardly, but was satisfied that it was able to obtain cover as per the pre-race instructions. Mr. Dann went on to say that whilst he had hoped for an improved performance, if able to obtain cover during the event, he was somewhat surprised the gelding was able to win today’s event, Mr Dann also advised, the horse had worked well in preparation for todays event. Stewards noted the explanation.

MAC’S GIRL- Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

BOBBY AXELROD- Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

MISS MAKEPEACE- At a point approaching the 200m was forced to shift out across heals to obtain clear running when another runner to the outside shifted in.

Race 4: HUTCHISON QUARRIES PTY LTD FILLIES AND MARES BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP – 1100m

NORMS CHOICE- Due to a clerical error the gear change of a cross-over nose band did not make some publications despite being approved by the prescribed time. When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance trainer T. Button advised that the filly was having its first start for his stable today and as such was unable to explain its prior form. Mr. Button did however advise that since joining his stable the filly had worked well and based on this he had expected an improved performance in todays event.

QUEEN OF THE NIGHT – Tightened shortly after the start and lost ground.

MISSLLREERS – Bumped on jumping.

WOOHOO GIRL – Began awkwardly.

RELIABLE LASS (NZ) – Slightly slow to begin and then was tightened for room shortly after and lost ground.

ABB ROY – Stewards questioned apprentice A. Patis in relation to her riding of the mare during the middle stages. Of concern to Stewards was Apprentice Patis’ failure maintain a trailing position behind GLENBAWNS DUTCHESS after being crossed by that runner near the 900m and further her failure to maintain a trailing position behind WOOHOO GIRL when crossed by that runner leaving the 800m. A. Patis advised that after beginning well she endeavoured to obtain a position behind the speed with cover, however at a point near the 900m after allowing GLENBAWNS’S DUTCHESS to cross, she received slight pressure from WOOHOO GIRL, which was racing to her outside, and therefore she elected to restrain and as a consequence lost her trailing position behind GLENBAWNS DUTCHESS. She went on to say that as a result of taking hold at this point, this allowed WOOHOO GIRL to improve forward of her and to cross mount. She added at a point leaving the 800m, her mount dropped the bit, failed to travel and as a result lost several lengths off the trailing position behind WOOHOO GIRL. After considering the matter Stewards were of the view that Apprentice Patis erred on two occasions, firstly in not pressuring her mount to maintain a position behind GLENBAWNS DUTCHESS and to the inside of WOOHOO GIRL and secondly in not pressuring her mount more to maintain a position behind WOOHOO GIRL when crossed by that runner. Stewards however were not of the view that her actions were culpable to the standard required to take the matter any further, particularly considering App. Patis’ status as an apprentice rider. Stewards did however advise Ms Patis of their intention to refer this ride to the Racing Qld Apprentice training department for their attention.

Race 5: TAB COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP – 1100m

KING BART- Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

WAIT A MINUTE – Slow to begin. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

Race 6: FASERS LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT CLASS 1 HANDICAP- 1500m

The start of this race was delayed when TYCOON PLAYER worked strongly to the barriers during the preliminary, taking some time to be controlled by its rider. The gelding subsequently underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.

After viewing the Stewards’ patrol footage, Jockey N. Tomizawa, the rider of RED MONKEY, placed 3rd by the Judge, lodged an objection against MILITARY KINGS being placed 2nd, alleging interference in the early stages of the home straight. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the available patrol footage, Stewards found that near the 250m MILITARY KINGS when positioned closely to the heels of LIVE MUSIC, shifted out on two occasions making heavy contact with RED MONKEY resulting in the runner becoming unbalanced, forced off its rightful running line and forced wider on the track. As a result, MILITARY KINGS was able to establish clear running to the inside of the RED MONKEY when otherwise it would have been held up, and unable to immediately secure clear running. Therefore as Stewards were satisfied that had MILITARY KINGS not shifted out in the manner on which it did, that RED MONKEY would have finished ahead of MILITARY KINGS at the conclusion of the event, the protest was upheld and as a consequence amended placings as follows: 1st TYCOON PLAYER, 2nd RED MONKEY, 3rd MILITARY KINGS, 4th PRUNDA.

TYCOON PLAYER – When questioned regarding the improved performance trainer S. Barker advised that he was satisfied with the horses performance three starts ago at Warwick where it was beaten three lengths. He was again satisfied with the gelding’s performance two starts ago at Kilcoy where it was beaten 5.45 lengths when forced to race wide for the majority of the event. Mr Barker went on to advise that in his opinion the horse was disappointed at it most recent start at Gatton over a further distance and as a result changed the horses work which he believes caused the gelding to derive a fitness benefit for today’s event. Stewards noted Mr Barker’s explanation.

PIRELLI - Began awkwardly.

LOVE FLIES – Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

MILITARY KINGS – Upon straightening shifted out, making heavy contact to the RED MONKEY on 2 occasions to secure clear running and forcing RED MONKEY wider onto the track.

LIVE MUSIC – Raced 4 wide without cover in the middle stages.

RANGAS RULE – Raced wide without cover throughout.

LOVE RUSH - Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced keenly during the early stages.
