When questioned, apprentice C. Bayliss stated that his instructions were to race in a rearward position, however, after jumping reasonably well and with a number of runners to his inside, rather than be caught wide he elected to race in a forward position, however, once obtaining the lead he steadied the pace in front which resulted in other horses improving around his outside and them taking up forward positions.
