Began very awkwardly and made heavy contact with the barrier partition, almost unbalancing its rider. When asked to explain the performance of the gelding, jockey J. Byrne expressed his view that the speed slackened quite appreciably mid-race and therefore he elected to come out to improve into the race passing the 700m and at the same time the leaders quickened and his mount then struggled to get into the race from that point. He added that in his opinion the gelding’s chances were not suited by the slow tempo in the middle stages and the quick sprint home.
