THE HAYDEN SLOT RACE: A TESTAMENT TO EXCELLENCE
The Hayden serves as Queensland's pathway to the $2.1 million TAB Eureka and is named after Matthew Hayden, one of Australia's greatest-ever test batsmen. The race continues to honor this highly regarded Queenslander, celebrated for his grit, determination, and strength.
As an embodiment of Matthew's staunch maroon pride, The Hayden stands as a prestigious qualification race for 3 and 4YO QBRED Pacers that must be Queensland trained and driven. It showcases the talent and dedication of local participants.
2024 EDITION: ELEVATING THE STAKES
The second running of The Hayden Slot Race, for eligible 3 & 4YO QBRED horses, will be run at Albion Park on Saturday, July 20, over 2138m. The race will once again offer a prize pool of $100,000 plus proceeds raised from the slot auction, with the winner set to compete in The Eureka at Menangle on the first Saturday in September. Last year, The Hayden was run for total stakes of $231,000.
GET INVOLVED (COMPLETED)
Slots were auctioned following the conclusion of the yearling sale. Instead of having set prices for each slot, the 10 barriers (slots) for The Hayden were auctioned off, with the auction proceeds being added to RQ’s $100,000 seed funding for the race. This way, those who purchased the better barriers theoretically had to pay more for the privilege and contribute more to the overall prize money. To emulate the preferential barrier draw required for the race (i.e. PBD Age/Sex), while also providing successful bidders with certainty when choosing their horse post-auction, the horse requirements for each barrier were predetermined. Slot holders must choose/nominate a horse as per the conditions of each barrier. The Sale was conducted by Nutrien Equine. View slot holder agreement and terms and conditions here.
SELECTING A HORSE
Once you have purchased your slot and completed the Slot Holders Agreement you are free to choose a horse to compete by either of the following methods:
- You may already own an eligible QBRED horse, noting you agree to compete in the $2.1m TAB Eureka should your horse win The Hayden; or
- Negotiate with an owner of an eligible QBRED horse, ensuring your agreement includes competing in the $2.1m TAB Eureka should your horse win The Hayden.
