SHOWASHADOW – Co-trainer W. Hulbert expressed his disappointment with J. Lloyd’s ride of the filly in the early stages, whereby he felt that his instructions, which were to go forward and race outside the leader, were not complied with. His concerns were that jockey Lloyd did not ride aggressively enough in the early stages and as a result was forced to race wide throughout without cover. J. Lloyd acknowledged the instructions, however noted that after his mount began well he attempted to ride forward but was unable to do so due to NEVER IN DOUBT, which was racing close to his inside, continuing to improve forward with him and as a result he elected to take hold of his mount and attempt to find cover in a midfield position. J. Lloyd’s explanation was noted. Mr Hulbert was advised that in future he should always raise with stewards any concerns he has with the manner in which a jockey has ridden a horse. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be making a slight respiratory noise.

DUTCH TREAT – Raced wide without cover.

EXCEED BATTLE – M. Cahill was questioned regarding the tactics he adopted on the mare, particularly when he raced in advance of BONSHO leaving the 800m. M. Cahill stated that he had been instructed to ride the mare in that fashion as the connections believed to restrain the mare would be a disadvantage. He added that he was hoping that R. Stewart (BONSHO) would allow him to ride forward, however this did not eventuate. He further added that he had previously ridden the mare on a number of occasions and when restraining her she did not finish the race off. Trainer D. Vandyke confirmed the instructions issued to jockey Cahill.

The start of this race was delayed when FEW TOO MANY required farrier attention.

LEGADEMA – Trainer T. Edmonds was fined $100 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card. Slow to begin. J. Lloyd was questioned regarding his tactics on the gelding. He stated that, having its first for the stable, he had been instructed to ride the gelding quietly from its wide barrier and settled at the rear of the field, however he was disappointed with the way the gelding finished the race off, adding that it was inclined to lay in under pressure. Trainer T. Edmonds confirmed the instructions to ride the gelding quietly. Mr Edmonds was advised that should these instructions change, he would be expected to notify the stewards of a change of tactics.

WONDER BOOM – Jumped awkwardly.

DARKTOWN STRUTTER – G. Colless reported that whilst some pressure was placed on the filly in the middle stages by WONDER BOOM, he was disappointed with its efforts in finishing the race off, adding that it may not have appreciated the track conditions today.

PRINCESS SNOWY – Had to be checked when tightened for room near the 250m.

STRADA GRANDE – As P. Hammersley was to be overweight, B. Grylls was substituted as the rider of the filly. Stewards accepted P. Hammersley’s explanation for being unable to fulfil the engagement. Bumped on jumping. Raced greenly and had to be steadied away from heels near the 900m.

GWAPO – Held up behind runners after leaving the 200m.

Race 4: BOQ – VICTORIA POINT BM80 H’CAP – 2040M

LAND OFFICE – Raced wide until approaching the 600m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Apprentice R. Ride was questioned regarding her riding of the horse rounding the home turn, in particular her reasons for allowing her mount to shift wider on the track, which allowed the eventual winner to improve to her inside. Ms Ride stated that the gelding was under pressure approaching the home turn when racing outside TREVINDER, and soon after straightening shifted out when weakening. After viewing the patrol footage, apprentice Ride agreed with the stewards that in hindsight she had not made sufficient effort to prevent her mount from shifting ground at that stage. Ms Ride was advised that in similar circumstances she must make greater effort to prevent her mounts shifting ground.
