From Doomben Meeting Saturday 4 August 2018 – Race 9

Jockey J. Lloyd was fined $300 under AR137(b) in that he failed to ride BEL BURGESS out approaching the end of the race, which in the opinion of stewards resulted in his mount being beaten for fifth placing.

GENERAL

As jockey P. Hammersley was indisposed due to an injury suffered at the Gold Coast earlier today stewards permitted rider changes as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: Eloise Gannon Foundation Fillies & Mares Class 6 Plate – 1200m

ZUMBELINA – Trainer C. Waller advised the intention would be to settle the horse in a handy position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly. Inconvenienced over the final stages when bumped by HIRTSHALS.

JADENTOM – Slow into stride. Jockey B. Stewart explained that the mare encountered a nice run and despite his urgings in the straight did not respond to his riding. Trainer L. Hatch submitted that both his runners today had recently returned from a campaign in North Queensland and may have felt the effects of the trip. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

SHESEES EVERYTHING – Shifted out rounding home turn and bumped HELLAROO.

HELLAROO – Hampered and forced wider rounding the home turn. Jockey M. McGillivray (SHESEES EVERYTHING) was cautioned and advised to show greater care when shifting ground in the future.

CANBERRA – Hampered rounding the home turn.

FREQUENDLY – Hampered rounding the home turn.

HIRTSHALS - App J. Murphy reported at scale that his mount was inclined to lay out under pressure in the home straight.

Race 2: Solid Ground Landscaping QTIS 3YO Handicap – 1110m

AILEACH – Slow into stride.

MISSIE ARCHER – Slow into stride.

PINCH MEMORY – Whilst overracing approaching the 600m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MITTERE.

EF TROOP – When questioned as to the tactics adopted jockey B. Stewart stated that after beginning well he anticipated that the gelding would gather speed to cross forward and settle outside of EXACTAMENTE. However, it failed to muster early speed at which point he was reluctant to ride forward vigorously as the gelding had shown a tendency to overrace previously. As a consequence the gelding was obliged to race wide throughout without cover. Jockey Stewart conceded that he may have erred in failing to ride the gelding more vigorously out of the barriers. Trainer T. Gollan indicated that he had anticipated the gelding would settle on the speed however noted that as a two year old the gelding, whilst beginning well, took time in the early stages to reach top speed and as a consequence was not overly critical of jockey Stewarts tactics. Mr Gollan added that despite the wide run he was of the view that the gelding was still going to win before dipping near the 200m after which it appeared to lose momentum. Their explanations were noted.

Race 3: Moda Events Portside Open Handicap – 1350m

ORDER AGAIN – Slow into stride.

TAILLEVENT – Overraced in the early stages.

CORNROW – Had to be checked near the 200m to avoid the heels of ORDER AGAIN, which shifted in. Jockey L. Cassidy (ORDER AGAIN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the 200m he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount crossing the rightful running of CORNROW, which had to be checked. Jockey Cassidys licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of eight (8) days to commence midnight 15 August 2018 and expire midnight 23 August 2018.

Race 4: Eaton Services Group Class 3 Plate – 1050m

MEDITERRANEAN – Slow to begin. Inclined to hang in in the early part of the home straight when attempting to improve between DISTRICT and ODELIA. Near the 100m was struck over the head by the whip of App Q. Krogh (ODELIA).

I AM VENUS – After being caught wide in the early stages had to be ridden forward after the 800m to race outside the leader.

AGGRAVATE – Commenced to race very keenly after the 700m and had to be checked away from heels approaching the 500m. Unable to muster early speed and as a result settled towards the rear of the field.

FROM WITHIN – Bumped by TAWFIQ BOY at the winning post.

TAWFIQ BOY – Hung in over the final stages.

DISTRICT – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

Race 5: Brisbane BMW Open Handicap – 2050m

MONTAUK – Had difficulty securing clear running in the home straight and as a result went to the line not fully tested by its rider.

VASSAL – Bumped on the hind quarters approaching the home turn.

TUMULTUOUS – Held up from the 300m until the 150m.

MY GIULIANO – Cast an off fore plate during the event and as a result pricked its hoof and was found to be lame in that leg.

IRISH OPTIMISM – Jockey M. McNab reported that in his opinion the gelding did not appreciate todays firm surface and was inclined to hang out until the home straight. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant findings. Connections will be advised that the gelding must compete to the satisfaction of stewards in an official barrier trial before racing again.

Race 6: Ray White Ascot Colts, Geldings & Entires Class 6 Plate – 1200m

FORTENSKY - Trainer C. Waller advised the intention would be to settle the horse in a handy position if circumstances permit. Fractious in the barriers and reared on a number of occasions. Hampered at the start and raced rearward. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

SUSPENSE – Hampered soon after the start.

GOTYACOVERED – Raced three wide without cover throughout.

Race 7: Kelly Lawyers NMW Handicap – 1650m

LIKE A RULER – Checked severely when crowded on jumping. Momentarily held up near the 200m.

REALLY REILLY – Hampered at the start.

VICTORY EIGHT – Began awkwardly and stumbled. Jockey M. Cahill reported that when the pace weakened from the 600m his mount failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

GODZONE GIRL – Slow into stride. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight jockey J. Orman explained that he remained to the inside of BOLD SHOT as he was mindful that it had to race three wide without cover throughout and he felt that he would have been able to improve to the inside of that runner when it weakened. He added that when BOLD SHOT did not weaken as he anticipated he was obliged to shift to the outside of that runner to make his final run. Stewards noted his explanation.

CONTRALTO – Bumped near the 250m by another runner.
