When questioned in relation to the performance of GOLD CUFFLINKS which was unable to obtain clear running for the majority of the home straight, Jockey D Edmonds stated that he had been instructed by Trainer Mr. T Butts not to bustle the gelding in the early stages and to allow it to run into the race with the preferred option being to not attempt inside runs unless they were clearly presented. Mr Butts agreed that these were the instructions he had given however was disappointed when Jockey Edmonds, who was having his initial ride on the circuit, had elected to persist with rails running when improving into the race leaving the 500m rather than easing to the outside of runners in an attempt to obtain clear running on straightening. Jockey Edmonds agreed with Stewards assessment in that he had erred at that point of the race as he was anticipating the leaders to fan at the home turn, however this did not eventuate. In noting Jockey Edmonds’ explanation Stewards advised him that a Jockey of his considerable experience he would be expected show better judgment under similar circumstances in future.

When questioned in relation to the performance of MAGNUS RULES which raced below market expectations Jockey J Felix was at a loss other than to advise that the gelding had never travelled comfortably at any stage of the race. Trainer Ms. J Hassett could not shed any further light on the performance but advised that the stable had supported the mare in today’s race and it was the intention to continue on with its preparation. A post-race Veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Ms. Hassett undertook to advise Stewards should anything which may have had a bearing on today’s performance become evident in coming days.

CAPTAINS WAY - Jockey D Edmonds stated that the gelding had been reluctant to stretch out in the early and middle stages after another runner had established a commanding lead over the remainder of the field, but had finished off its race reasonably.
