Following the running of this event stewards downgraded the track to HEAVY 9.

Race 3: USG BORAL QTIS 2YO C&G MAIDEN H'CAP – 1200M

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to consider a protest lodged by J. Stanley, the rider of ACCARDO, placed 2nd by the Judge, against BRIGALOW BOY (R. Wiggins) being declared the winner, alleging interference over the final 100m. After considering all the evidence and viewing the patrol footage, stewards established that approaching the 100m ACCARDO laid in, and approaching the final 20m BRIGALOW BOY laid out, slightly brushing ACCARDO. After taking into account the extent of the interference and its proximity to the winning post, stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred ACCARDO would have beaten BRIGALOW and as such dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.

ACCARDO – Laid in under pressure in the straight.

BLOW THE WHISTLE – In the vicinity of the 900 became awkwardly placed on the heels of ACCARDO, which rolled out for a stride. Jockey L. Tilley pleaded guilty to a charge of excessive use of the whip (8 times prior to the 100m, 18 times in total) and was fined $100.

In assessing penalty, stewards were mindful that this was jockey Dillon’s third suspension in regards to excessive whip use in the past 4 weeks.

The horse was examined by the veterinarian and was found to have paresis in both hind legs, which resulted in a catastrophic pelvic injury and as such was humanely euthanised. A post-mortem sample was taken from the horse. Jockey R. Wiggins was examined by ambulance officers and was cleared of injury.

EDGE OF REALITY – Contacted on jumping away and as a result was slow into stride. Raced wide throughout the event.

POINTO’S PICK – Rider L. Tilley reported that his mount raced fiercely throughout the event and in the vicinity of the 700m clipped the heels of the falling MISS MAGNITUDE, resulting in POINTO’S PICK having to take evasive action and placing the horse at a disadvantage for the remainder of the event.

Rowe stated that SILVER LUCY had pleased in its work leading up to today’s event and had trialled positively leading into today’s race and he was confident of an improved performance today.

Following the running of Race 5 stewards and a group of senior riders examined a section of the track in the vicinity of the 700m. After doing so, the riders group expressed concern with a section of track near the running rail in the vicinity of the 700m and were of the opinion that remedial work would be required to shift the running rail out if the meeting was to continue. Due to the late hour of the day, that remedial work was unable to be completed and as such the riders group withdrew their services and the final two races (Races 6 and 7) were abandoned.
