LUPO NERO – Raced wide without cover. Stewards questioned apprentice T. Williams regarding her riding in the early stages where it appeared she had opportunity to ride vigorously to cross runners to her inside in order to take up a position closer to the lead and to the fence, which is the established racing pattern for her mount.   Apprentice Williams indicated she had been instructed to attempt to obtain cover and pre race she was of the view that there were horses to her inside, namely ITALIAN BELLA and A TOUCH MORE,  which would have raced forward and she would have been able to steady and settle behind those horses, and for this reason she did not ride vigorously in the early stages.  After viewing the patrol footage, Miss Williams accepted that, with hindsight, she would have been better served riding more aggressively and crossed runners to her inside to obtain a position closer to the fence.   Stewards agreed that this had been an error in judgement and considering her status as an apprentice, did not take the matter any further.  A post race  veterinary examination revealed the horse had bled from both nostrils.  Connections were advised that the gelding would be barred from racing for a period of 3 months.

CHAR CHAR – When asked to comment on the tactics adopted, jockey J. Lloyd reported he intended to ride the gelding with cover and attempted to do so in the early stages, however after passing the 1200m he was still placed in a 3-wide position and when the tempo of the race was only steady he rode aggressively from that point to assume a position outside the lead near the 800m.

Race 9: Maroochydore Roos Drummo Open H’cap – 1400m

SIMANNKA – Jockey S. Galloway was questioned regarding the circumstances which resulted in a towel being caught on his foot when his mount left the barriers and being dropped at approximately the 1350m.  Jockey Galloway advised he had asked for a towel to dry sweat from his mount’s neck when behind the barriers and he  had laid it across the horse’s shoulder whilst waiting to be placed in the barriers.  He had then forgotten he had the towel and it remained on the horse until it became dislodged.  Stewards considered the explanation and reprimanded jockey Galloway under AR175(k), in that his actions were considered negligent in the circumstances. Jockey  Galloway reported the horse was making an abnormal respiratory noise during the event.  A post race veterinary examination of the horse, which weakened badly from the 600m, revealed it may have been suffering from a respiratory condition and the horse must undergo an endoscopic examination, the results of which to be provided to stewards, in addition to an official trial, prior to its next race start.  Trainer G. Newham indicated the horse would be retired following this event.

Race 10: National Construction Management Class 6 H’cap – 1600m

ALL SUMMER LONG – Trainer K. Lees was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time. Apprentice J. Van Overmeie advised that the horse settled in a favourable one-off position, however when the pace quickened  at the 700m failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing.  Trainer K. Lees advised stewards that the gelding would now be sent for a  short spell to be freshened up, and advised that he would report to stewards any condition that comes to his notice with the horse that may have had a bearing on today’s disappointing performance.  A post race veterinary examination  revealed a poor recovery rate and showing signs of being dehydrated.

Vandyke indicated that in light of today’s performance he would send the horse for a spell and was of the opinion that the gelding failed to run out a strong 1600m and it would be his intention that  in the horse’s next preparation he would limit its runs to 1400m or shorter.
