When asked to comment on the performance of the horse, jockey R. Fradd  indicated his mount travelled well, was momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn, and then shifted out to obtain clear running near the 400m.  He added that  after obtaining clear running the horse did not quicken as he would have liked, however COTTON FIELDS did finish the race off well over the final 100m, and as a result of this he suggested that the horse  would be suited to races over further distances.

Cormack was asked to explain his tactics in leading today, which is in contrast to the horse’s established racing pattern. He indicated that he had been instructed to ride in a midfield position, however when caught wide in the early stages it became apparent he would not be able to obtain a position closer to the fence midfield and therefore elected to allow the horse to stride forward to the lead passing the 900m.

ROMANESQUE – Lost its near fore late in running.

BRADBURY – Stewards questioned jockey S. Cormack regarding his riding of the horse.  Of concern to stewards was that after being significantly slow to begin he then did not place pressure on the horse in order to attempt to remain in touch with the main body of the field until entering the home straight.  Jockey Cormack explained that after the horse was slow to begin he immediately felt the horse was short in its action and therefore  did not place any  pressure on it to improve.  A post race veterinary examination confirmed that BRADBURY was sore in the off foreleg and had also shifted its off fore plate.  Stewards advised  stable representative J. Pengelly that a veterinary certificate would be required prior to  BRADBURY being permitted to  start again.
