CATCH ME LATAR – Jockey A. Allen pleaded guilty to a charge under AR135(b) in that he did apply pressure to the gelding approaching and  rounding the home turn with a lap remaining and shifted wider upon straightening and continued to pressure the horse to the winning post with a lap remaining before easing the horse after the post.  In the opinion of the stewards, he failed to give his mount full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible position in the race.  Jockey A. Allen was suspended from riding in races for a period of 6 weeks, to commence at midnight, 23 October and to expire at midnight, 4 December 2018. When considering penalty the Stewards took into account Mr Allen’s unblemished record with a charge of this kind, penalty precedents and the circumstances of this particular breach. Stewards also considered that Mr Allen is a senior rider and that these matters have a negative impact on the image of the sport.

LEPRECHAUN LAD – Stewards questioned trainer K. Hickmott regarding the gelding firming in the market significantly today. Mr Hickmott explained that due to recent wet weather, the horse had missed some engagements and raced last Saturday, 20 October, at the Gold Coast over the unsuitable distance of 1400m.  He stated he did not support the horse today and advised connections it may have a place chance in today’s event. The explanation was noted.

STELLA’S CHANCE – When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance, trainer Mr L. Ross noted the gelding was having only its third start for his stable, the first start of which was over the unsuitable distance of 1400m, and at its last start over 1800m the horse began awkwardly and was obliged to settle further back in the field than anticipated. Mr Ross added that the gelding was suited by the step up in distance today when able to be ridden in a more prominent position.
