McMahon, K. McMahonVeterinarian – S. FlynnSwab Attendants – L. Bobeszko Starter – K. Watson SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT From Gold Coast Trials 28/08/2023: Trainer M. Palmer pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR 99(1)(b) in that he failed to correctly identify GALLEGOS which was engaged to run in trial 5 and as a consequence presented the thoroughbred ZEITA, which resulted in GALLEGOS being withdrawn from the trial. After considering submission on penalty, Stewards imposed a fine of $400. GENERAL As J. Morris was not riding for acceptable reasons, Stewards permitted rider changes as per the Raceday Summary sheet. Stewards conducted several unannounced stable visits prior to the meeting for horses engaged at today’s meeting with no breaches of rules identified. Stewards permitted the following weight variations at today’s meeting:Race 6: KING DICK – K Matheson 55kg (+1kg) Race 1: STRONGER AT AQUIS BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 2450 M READY BY DESIGN – Left a midfield trailing position approaching the 900m and progressed forward to obtain the lead near the 800m. GAMBU (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Leaving the 650m bumped, became unbalanced and forced wider when SMELTER shifted out to improve. K. Zechner, rider of SMELTER, was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) for this incident. SAVILEO – Slow to begin. When asked to comment on today’s performance, Jockey S. Collett stated after being slow to begin the horse settled further back in the field than anticipated, adding that SAVILEO was not suited by the slow early pace of the race and being obliged to race back in the field. S. Collett added that when the pace quickened leaving the 1200m SAVILEO was unable to improve when held up and after obtaining clear running near the 800m, was somewhat disappointing in its finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be displaying symptoms of mild heat stress. MARIINSKY – Slow to begin and slow to muster speed in the early stages. Left a rearward trailing position at the 1200m, progressed forward to lead the event near the 900m. Jockey J. Lloyd was reprimanded pursuant to AR 132(7)(a)(ii) for using his whip 6 times prior to the 100m, one more than permitted. JUMEIRAH TRIANGLE – Near the 900m had to be steadied to avoid the heels of MARIINSKY which shifted in when not clear. Jockey J. Lloyd was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) for this incident. SMELTER – Lost off-fore plate in running. Race 2: TAB CLASS 2 PLATE 1650 M DRAKE PASSAGE (NZ) – Laid in under pressure in the home straight and as a consequence, approaching the winning post brushed with NOBLE CAT. NOBLE CAT – Fractious in the enclosure and broke through the enclosure fence. Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was subsequently cleared to start. Representative for trainer B. Lockwood was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s pre-race manners. ROCKED – Jumped out at the start and bumped VOLEDMORT. Lost near hind plate in running. VOLDEMORT – Bumped at the start. DOTNED – Declared a late scratching at 11:55am when trainer M. Palmer reported the mare had become cast in its stable. DESERT FLAME – On arrival to the barriers, the saddle was re-adjusted. Over raced in the early stages of the event, and as a result near the 1000m had to be restrained from the heels of VOLDEMORT. Race 3: KOBAYASHI AT AQUIS BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1400 M MY PINS (NZ) – Began awkwardly. ASCOT EXPRESS (NZ) – Leaving the 1200m crowded for room and had to be checked. At a subsequent inquiry M. Hellyer, rider of MY PINS, pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR 131(a) in that he made insufficient effort to prevent MY PINS shifting in at a point leaving the 1200m resulting in ASCOT EXPRESS having to be checked. The license of M. Hellyer to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight 7th of October 2023 up to and including midnight 15th of October 2023. SADDLES – Slow to begin and unable to muster speed in the early stages. Raced wide from the 700m. SIR PICCOLO – Approaching the 700m when the pace of the race eased, had to be restrained from the heels of EASIER SAID. Held up behind the tiring EASIER SAID approaching the 400m before shifting out around that runners heels a short distance later to obtain clear running. POLE VOLTER – On arrival to the barriers, the saddle was re-adjusted. Trainer R. Lyford pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR 185 in that added a set of ring to the gear of the horse after Jockey S. Collett had weighed out. Mr Lyford was fined a sum of $200. Race 4: DERBY DAY NOVEMBER 4TH MAIDEN HANDICAP 1400 M The start of this event was delayed approximately 3 minutes after LUCKY ROLLA required a replacement bridle after becoming fractious behind the barriers, and then was reluctant when being loaded into the starting gates. LUNARIAN (NZ) – Slow to begin. Leaving the 700m laid out and bumped AVENTINE HILL. Raced greenly when placed under pressure in the home straight. AVENTINE HILL – Bumped leaving the 700m. CARDIATIC – Raced wide in the early stages. Weakened from the 700m and finished some distance from main body of the field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. T. Churchill was advised a warning would be placed on the horse for a poor performance. Trainer T. Churchill added that it would now be her intention to remove the blinkers from the geldings approved gear. LUCKY ROLLA – Delayed the start of the event after becoming fractious and requiring the horse’s bridle to be replaced and then proved difficult to load. Trainer N. Stewart was advised the gelding would require a barrier certificate prior to its next race start. Raced wide for the majority of the event. SUBAQUA – Began awkwardly and lost ground. MADAM MAGNOLIA – Raced keenly in the early stages. When weakening near the 300m crowded for room and steadied between TOLIMA and NEWMARKET MISS which shifted out to improve. B. Ainsworth rider of NEWMARKET MISS was advised to exercise greater care in future. NEWMARKET MISS – Raced greenly when placed under pressure and as a result leaving the 150m shifted in and crowded PRETTY LITTLE LIAR. NO DOUBLE DIPPING – From the wide barrier, restrained shortly after the start to a rearward position closer to the rails. PRETTY LITTLE LIAR – Laid out rounding the home turn. Crowded for room and taken in leaving the 150m. RAINEWATER – Had to be steadied from heels near the 1200m when racing keenly. Held up for clear running between the 500m and the 350m. Approaching the 100m disappointed for a run to the inside of PRETTY LITTLE LIAR and was then obliged to shift out to secure clear running a short distance later. GISELLE'S GAMBLE – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Race 5: LEAN MEAN MACHINE AT AQUIS BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1400 M BULLET FORCE – Bumped at the start. INQUEST – Trainer B. Laming was fined $200 under LR 67(1) for failing to declare a rider within the prescribed time. DWINDLING SPIRIT – Jumped out at the start and bumped BULLET FORCE. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey J. Huxtable advised Stewards DWINDLING SPIRIT travelled comfortably in the run, however when placed under pressure passing the 300m did not let down as expected. MAPLE DOOR – Slow to begin. Raced wide for the majority. MISHANI CONMAN – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. DREAM ENTITY – Held up for clear running approaching and rounding the home turn. GALLERY MASTER – Eased by its rider from the 400m and finished a considerable distance from the main body of the field. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying lower and upper respiratory noises. C. Meehan was advised GALLERY MASTER would require a veterinary certificate, inclusive of endoscopic results prior to its next race start. Trainer C. Meehan indicated GALLERY MASTER would now be retired from racing however was advised that should circumstances change the horse must also trial satisfactorily prior to racing. OVER THE FALLS – Jockey W. D’Avila, rider of 4th place getter was reminded of his obligations AR 131(b) to ride his mount out fully to the end of the race. In arriving at this decision, Stewards were satisfied that his actions did not have an effect on the horses’ placing. Race 6: THE MISSION AT AQUIS CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1200 M BULLION BOY – Became awkwardly placed at the heels of MILLIFFE rounding the home turn. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey G. Cartwright advised Stewards the gelding travelled comfortably throughout however when placed under pressure in the home straight was disappointing. STRIKING PLAINS (NZ) – Bumped after the start and lost ground. GOING TO THE SUN – Laid in under pressure near the 150m resulting in TRAITORS’ GATE racing in restricted room for a short distance and bumping KING DICK on the hind quarters. SEA DRAGON – Jumped in at the start. Jockey L. Tarrant reported the horse was inclined to hang out for the majority of the event and for this reason he desisted from pressuring the horse in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer K. Baumann was advised SEA DRAGON must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. EUROMANTIC – Checked approaching the 500m. At a subsequent inquiry G. Cartwright, rider of BULLION BOY, pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR 131(a) in that she permitted her mount to shift in at a point approaching the 500m resulting in EUROMANTIC having to be checked and lose its position. The license of G. Cartwright to ride in races was suspended for a period of 12 days to commence midnight 10th of October 2023 up to and including midnight 22nd of October 2023, and which commences at the expiring of a term of suspension incurred from the Ipswich meeting on 25th September. Taken wider on the track in the home straight when MILLIFFE laid out under pressure. MILLIFFE – Laid out rounding the home turn resulting in BULLION BOY becoming awkwardly placed at that runners’ heels for a short distance, and then continued to lay out under pressure in the home straight taking EUROMANTIC wider on the track.
