STEWARDS REPORT

GOLD COAST TURF CLUB @ BEAUDESERT

SATURDAY 30 MARCH 2024

WEATHER – Overcast TRACK RATING – Heavy (10) RAIL – True
PENETROMETER – 6.9

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – B. Wright
Stewards – A. Schofield, D McMahon, A. Brook (Assistant), S. Borg (Cadet)

SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT
From Gold Coast barrier trials 28/03/2024
Apprentice J. Williams pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR113, in that he used his mobile phone whilst mounted on a horse at the Gold Coast official barrier trials on 28th March 2024 and at Gold Coast trackwork on 30th March 2024. Apprentice Williams was fined the sum of $400.

GENERAL
As P. Hammersley was injured, he was replaced as per the Raceday Summary.

Stewards approved the following overweights:
Race 1. J. Guthman-Chester +1kg

Eleven riders underwent random breath testing on arrival at today’s meeting and no abnormalities were detected.

Race 1: JONKER FIRST WEANLINGS MAIDEN PLATE 1400 Metres

The start of this race was delayed approximately three minutes when PIG IN THE CITY required farrier attention on arrival at the barriers.

NOAH – For some distance approaching the home turn had difficulty obtaining clear running around weakening horses.

PRICE COST – Raced wide without cover throughout.

I SAW THE LIGHT – Steadied approaching the 600m.

LOVE ON DISPLAY – Raced keenly during the early and middle stages.

OUR ESPRIT – Slow to begin.

RUBIES – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 600m, steadied to avoid the heels of MILLIE THE MOUCHER (apprentice L. Barr), which shifted in when not fully clear. I SAW THE LIGHT, which was following was also steadied. Apprentice L. Barr was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident. Eased down from the 400m. Apprentice J. Williams could offer no excuse for the disappointing performance. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination, which revealed the mare to be displaying moderate signs of heat stress. Trainer P. Jenkins was advised the RUBIES must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards and will also require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

PIG IN THE CITY – Received farrier attention on arrival at the barriers after shifting a plate during the preliminary and underwent a veterinary examination. Raced wide without cover until the 700m.

Race 2: TAB BETS FRIENDS MAIDEN PLATE 1400 Metres

AJAY'S RANGER – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after not racing since October 2022. Trainer B. Ahrens advised after speaking with connections, AJAY’S RANGER will now be retired.

BARGARA BOUND – After leaving the gates was bumped by LITTLE CHARMER, which shifted in.

NO DOUBLE DIPPING – Raced wide without cover throughout.

BORN TO BE ALIVE – After beginning well from an outside barrier, was able to cross and lead. Trainer A. Chau explained the gelding did not perform well when ridden back for its first start for the stable. He said that he was hoping the gelding would be more forward in the run today and of so, would show an improved performance.

REAL STORY – Began awkwardly and bumped LAVONI.

LITTLE CHARMER – Jockey M. Hellyer reported his mount raced keenly during the early stages.

PLAYED AN ACE – Raced wide without cover throughout.

LAVONI – Bumped on jumping.

MARLEE'S ZANDER – Apprentice R. Thorburn dropped his whip near the 150m. Apprentice R. Thorburn was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts to the end of the race, where possible.

Race 3: GLENFIDDICH FIRST WEANLINGS QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1100 Metres

Stewards considered an objection lodged by J. Guthmann-Chester (QUADE), which was placed second in the race, against the winner, BEACHSIDE BABE (A. Spinks), alleging interference near the 300m. On the evidence, Stewards were of the view that near the 300m, QUADE had established clear running between KING OF THE JUNGLE and BEACHSIDE BABE, received tightening from BEACHSIDE BABE, which was racing to the outside, resulting in QUADE being eased, losing ground and its position. After considering all the circumstances, as the Stewards were of the view had the interference to Quade not occurred, that gelding would have finished ahead of BEAHCHSIDE BABE at the end of the race and therefore the objection was upheld and correct weight declared on the numbers 9-8-3-11. Subsequently, Jockey A. Spinks was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for shifting in when not fully clear in this incident.

BEACHSIDE BABE – Raced wide throughout.

QUADE – Eased and lost ground near the 300m.

Race 4: BEAUDESERTRACECLUB.COM CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1650 Metres

Correct weight was delayed to allow jockey R. Jamieson, rider of second placegetter TAKUNAI, to view the available films to ascertain whether to lodge an objection against first placegetter THIS’LLBETHEONE. Jockey R. Jamieson elected not to proceed and correct weight was declared on the judge’s semaphored numbers.

HOT BANANAS – Apprentice C. Collis pleaded guilty to a charge under AR131(b) in that he failed to ride the mare out over the final two strides of the race. Apprentice C. Collis’s permit to ride in races was suspended for six days commencing at midnight 1st of April and ending midnight the 7th of April 2024. In assessing penalty, account was taken of his guilty plea, his record under this rule, his status as an apprentice rider and that BRYENTACH should have been placed fourth in the race.
.

TAKUNAI – Approaching the 100m, obliged to shift out when THIS’LLBETHEONE shifted out, before being corrected.

Race 5: KOBAYASHI @ AQUIS STALLIONS MAIDEN HANDICAP 1650 Metres

ALIGN THE PLANETS – After making the crossing near the 1200m, blundered.

BREYTENBACH – Raced keenly during the early stages. Apprentice A. Donald pleaded guilty to a charge under AR131(b) in that she failed to ride the gelding out over the final three strides of the race. Apprentice A. Donald’s permit to ride in races was suspended for thirteen days commencing midnight the 6th of April 2024 until midnight the 19th of Aril 2024. In assessing penalty, account was taken of her guilty plea, record under this rule, her status as an apprentice rider and that BRYENTACH should have been placed third in the race.

WHISKY TRAIN (NZ) – Held up for clear running from the 400m to the 200m.

ALASKA DE LUNE – Approaching the 500m, shifted out from behind the tiring FORGETS ME NOT into clear running. BON’S ZEN, which was racing to the outside, steadied as a consequence.

BETTERSAIDTHANDONE – Began awkwardly. Raced ungenerously during the early stages.

BON'S ZEN – Slow to begin.

FORGETS ME NOT – Raced wide without cover for the majority.

Following the running of race 5, several riders expressed concerns with sections of the track from the 1200m to 350m. Along with a delegation of riders, Stewards inspected the relevant sections and found there were a number of deep divot holes, that despite some back filling, did not provide appropriate footing for horses. All riders privately discussed the findings, whereupon a delegation advised Stewards the riding group was not happy to continue with the meeting. On this basis, Stewards abandoned the remainder of the meeting at 3.00pm.
