GENERAL

Due to the abandonment of the Canterbury meeting, Racing Queensland was reallocated race times as per those scheduled for Canterbury.

Race 1: SKY RACING QTIS 2YO FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M

The start of this race was delayed due primarily to LUCKY SHOW GIRL being difficult to load.

CAPETOWN HUSSEY – Slow to begin.

KIRSTEN COVE – Steadied and shifted out near the 900m when awkwardly placed close to heels and raced three wide thereafter.

KIRSTEN COVE – Jumped a shadow near the 1000m.

LIGHT SHOWS – Began awkwardly. Became badly unbalanced near the 900m. Momentarily held up near the 200m.

POINCON – Slow to begin.

RED CHANDELIER – Hung out rounding the turn.

RIPPER STREET – Bled from both nostrils. Ineligible to race for 3 months, and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a steward.

WATCHED – Held up from the 500m until straightening. When questioned, J. Byrne explained that from the 800m the filly was inclined to hang out and for this reason he was reluctant to avail himself of a run to the inside of DEEP DOWN, which was shifting ground in the conditions, and for this reason he elected to remain racing behind that horse until straightening where he was able to shift to the outside of DEEP DOWN and place his mount under full pressure.

LUCKY SHOW GIRL – Difficult to load. A warning was placed against the filly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be stepping slightly short in front. Trainer M. Dunn’s representative confirmed that the horse would now be sent for a spell.

Race 2: CHANNEL SEVEN QTIS 2YO C&G MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M

BOYS FROM THE BUSH – Blundered badly at the start. Overraced in the early stages and then continued to do so until near the 600m when it then shifted out abruptly. Hung in in the straight. The veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had a poor post-race recovery rate.

CHARCUTERIE – Checked away from the heels of COOL GAMBLER when overracing in the early stages. Shifted out badly when overracing making the first turn, resulting in COOL GAMBLER being badly crowded.

CLOUT – Lost its near hind plate in running.

COOL GAMBLER – Badly crowded making the first turn.

HOW JAMMY’S THAT – Became unbalanced when bumped on the hind quarters making the first turn.

MISHANI REDMAN – Raced three wide without cover.

Race 3:CARNIVAL BALL – 16TH MAY MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M

HOMEHILL – Apprentice L. Dittman reported that his intention was to take up a midfield position with cover, however after beginning well, with no speed in the early stages, he elected to allow it to travel forward and sit outside the leader.

BROCSON – Slow to begin.

FIFTEEN LOVE – Raced three wide from the 800m.

FLAUTINO – Began awkwardly and was slow into stride.

SPEED TEST – Raced four wide from the 800m.

SAMMY SPARROW – Slow to begin. Became badly unbalanced for a couple of strides when racing in restricted room near the 800m.

Race 4: STRADBROKE EVE CALCUTTA – 5TH BM85 H’CAP – 1350M

CHALUPA – Allowed to stride forward to race outside the leader when trapped three wide in the early stages.

VAZ DE TORRES – Slow into stride.

COLOUR CHARGE – D. Griffin explained that the gelding settled in a rearward position, however he became concerned in the early stages of the race that the horse was reluctant to travel for him. He said from the 900m, when it commenced to turn, COLOUR CHARGE was inclined to lay in and was off the bit and despite his efforts would not respond. He added that, although over further distance, COLOUR CHANGE had previously raced poorly at this track. He further added that despite his efforts the gelding failed to respond to his riding in the straight and was most disappointing. Trainer N. McCall could offer no explanation other than that the horse has performed poorly at Doomben in the past and may be better suited by racing at bigger tracks. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

RACE 5: GARRARDS HORSE & HOUND RATINGS BAND 0-70 H’CAP – 1350M

PASQUINEL – Steadied when crowded between runners near the 100m.

CEE THE DRAGON – Raced wide throughout.

JACK BE QUICK – R. Williams reported that her mount hung out badly throughout and near the 1000m , whilst hanging, was checked of the heels of HIGH ACE, then continued to hang out and near the 900m hung out across the heels of NEARCTIC CHILLER and was checked. A warning was placed on the gelding.

NEARCTIC CHILLER – Had to be steadied near the 1000m when awkwardly placed Overraced in the middle stages.

ROMAN SECRET – Raced four wide throughout.

Race 6: TREASURY CASINO & HOTEL QLD OAKS – 30TH MAY RATINGS BAND 0-70 H’CAP – 1050M

CONFIDENT STAR – Raced in restricted room after the 800m. Steadied when crowded for room near the 600m.

SINGLE CHANCE – Crowded slightly shortly after the start.

RAPT IN RUMBA – Raced in restricted room after the 800m.

VULCANIC DRAGON – Crowded slightly shortly after the start.

OMISSION – Began awkwardly and shifted out.

WILLOW MIST – Raced extremely wide.

MEZZANOTTE – Steadied when inconvenienced near the 600m and then held up and carried back by CONFIDENT STAR, which was weakening.

Race 7: AAMI STRADBROKE DAY – 6TH JUNE CLASS 6 PLATE – 1110M

REMAGEN BRIDGE – Steadied from heels after the 600m.

GET ON – Slow into stride.

SAMMI JAIN – N. Day was fined $300 for using the whip more than 5 times in a forehand manner prior to the 100m.

WATLING – Awkwardly placed on heels near the 600m. The veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding was galloped on on the near hind leg and had sustained a laceration to the outside heel. Lost its off hind plate in running.

Race 8: UBET CUP CARNIVÁLE DAY – 9TH MAY CLASS 3 PLATE – 1200M

CELESTIAL DRAGON – Hung in in the straight.

FLIGHT ACADEMY – Inconvenienced slightly near the 400m.

KATIE’S COVE – T. Harrison explained that the intention was always to ride her mount behind midfield, which she did. She said shortly after jumping from the inside draw she was intending to get her mount towards the middle of the track but approaching the first turn was unable to do so when racing tight to the inside of HIDDEN ROSE. She said from the 600m KATIE’S COVE did not track into the race as she would have hoped and despite her placing it under pressure before the home turn, the mare did not respond and in the straight was most disappointing. Trainer M. Mair advised that in his opinion the mare had sufficient fitness going into the race, having had three barrier trials which in his opinion were only fair. He said he was somewhat surprised with its market assessment based on its work and its trials, however was of the view that its previous form was a factor. Mr Mair advised that it was now his intention to step the horse up in distance, provided the mare pulled up satisfactorily after today’s run. Mr Mair undertook to report to stewards should anything amiss become apparent in the ensuing days. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

HENNY’S HERO – Fractious behind the barriers, reared and threw itself down, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Stood flat-footed on jumping and lost considerable ground, then trailed the field throughout and took no competitive part. Trainer D. Hansen advised that it was now his intention to retire the gelding. He was nevertheless advised that should it race in the future it would be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial before being permitted to start.

HIDDEN ROSE – Bumped heavily by KATIE’S COVE near the 900m.
