Jockey Byrne explained that the gelding travelled comfortably but was left flatfooted when the pace quickened from the 600m. Jockey Byrne stated that in his opinion the gelding would be better suited racing over a further distance than that of today.

PONYTALES – Rounding the home turn was bumped on a number of occasions when racing in restricted room to the outside of LUCKY JACKSON, which was also bumped and became unbalanced and to the inside of SOFIE’S GOLD CLASS, which laid in slightly.

OURS TO KEEP – After being loaded into the barriers became very fractious and was subsequently removed, examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to race. Over the final 100m improved onto heels and went to the line without being fully tested.

GRACIDA – Bumped on jumping. After passing the 800m had to be restrained when tightened for room by JUST ORM, which was racing directly to its outside which received pressure from GOLDFINCH, which was forced in slightly by PROMPT RETURN, which was taken in by STRATURBO, which shifted in away from TARZAN. At a subsequent inquiry stewards were of the view that STRATURBO shifting away from TARZAN had contributed to the interference and therefore could not attribute the carelessness of any one rider for the incident and took no direct action. Had to be eased down in the home straight. When questioned regarding the overall performance of GRACIDA today jockey J. Lloyd explained that when OURS TO KEEP became fractious in the adjacent stall prior to the start his mount became agitated and as a result did not show its customary early speed. Jockey Lloyd added that when he had to check near the 800m he lost significant ground and was then further inconvenienced near the 600m and in the home straight when racing at the rear of the field he eased the horse down. A post race veterinary examination did not reveal any significant findings. Trainer D. Vandyke advised stewards that the horse appears to have pulled up fine at this stage and he undertook to report to stewards should anything come to light in the coming days.
