SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From Ipswich 31/3/2023 – Stewards today concluded an inquiry into the tactics adopted by Jockey K Wilson-Taylor on MATOWATAKPE in Race 3 the Open Handicap 1350m. After taking evidence on the day from the rider and Trainer Mr J Bruce the matter was adjourned for further consideration of the panel and to also review wagering on the race. Stewards when considering the evidence tendered by jockey Wilson-Taylor, in particular his decision not to continue to follow TARA JASMINE ridden by M Cahill from the 600m and continue to ease wider approaching the home turn, jockey Wilson -Taylor stated that  he expected TARA JASMINE to improve quicker approaching the turn and when the mare did not, rather than electing to come very wide on the turn he chose to save ground and look for a run nearer the inside, with the expectation that a run would open up in the small field, however on straightening he was held up and obliged to wait until a run availed itself near the 250m. Jockey Wilson-Taylor stated that on review he made a poor decision and should have elected to continue to improve wider approaching the home. Stewards when considering the evidence in its totality, agreed with jockey Wilson-Taylor’s assertion that he had erred in his decision making but were not satisfied that he could be held culpable under the rules and noted his comments.
