Jockey Morris was of the opinion that the mare failed to handle today’s track conditions as it performs best on rain affected tracks. Trainer J. Morrisey was of the opinion that the mare’s disappointing performance today was as a result of it being forced to race further back in the field as it usually performs best when able to lead. Jockey Matheson added that leaving the 500m the gelding shifted wider so as to improve into the race. Upon straightening the gelding commenced to lay in and as a consequence near the 200m he was obliged to obtain another hold on the reins in an effort to prevent the gelding from continuing to lay in until the leaving the 100m, whereby he was able to ride the gelding with his usual vigour. Trainer B. Herne noted that the gelding had raced greenly at its last start when first up from a spell and had added blinkers for this start in an effort to have it race more tractably. Mr Herne agreed that the gelding again laid in today and as such was not critical of jockey Matheson’s riding in the straight. Stewards advised jockey Matheson that in their opinion MEDIA CIRCUS was not racing in a manner which necessitated him taking the action he did on this occasion. However, did not believe his actions were culpable under the Australian Rules of Racing as it was evident that the gelding was inclined to lay in during the home straight.
