Race 1: Sky Racing Maiden Plate – 2200m

EXCITEMENT LEVELS - Began awkwardly.

MAKAS KING RULER - Slow to begin. Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

ST JAMES SQUARE - Slow to begin.

JEEVERSON – A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding which commenced to weaken leaving the 800m failed to reveal any abnormalities at the time of examination. Trainer J Edwards advised stewards that it was now his intention to retire the gelding from racing. Stewards nevertheless advised Mr Edwards that should the gelding continue racing it would be required to establish competitive form at non-TAB venues.

Stewards questioned App. T Brooker (MANSALE) and App. J Guthmann-Chester (EXCITEMENT LEVELS) as to the riding of their respective mounts in the early and middle stages resulting in both horses leading by a considerable distance. App. Guthmann-Chester stated that he was instructed to obtain a forward position if possible but not to place the gelding under undue pressure in the early stages. App. Guthmann-Chester added that after beginning awkwardly he was obliged to ride the gelding along in an effort to obtain a forward position which he as able to do passing the winning post on the first occasion where he was able to settle outside MANSALE. After obtaining this position he attempted to steady and sit off MANSALE however the gelding commenced to over-race and despite his efforts refused to settle. App. Brooker stated that she was also instructed to obtain a forward position which she was able to do with relative ease from the wide barrier. App. Brooker added that passing the 1600m when EXCITEMENT LEVELS commenced to over-race outside her, she was reluctant to overly restrain her mount as she was of the opinion that this would cause the gelding to over-race thereby being detrimental to its chances. As a consequence, she allowed it to stride along but noted that it was under pressure leaving the 1000m. Stewards were satisfied with the explanation tendered by App. Guthmann-Chester however advised App. Brooker that in their opinion she had erred in her riding during the early stages in that she should have made a greater attempt to restrain the horse in an effort to give it a better opportunity to finish the race off to the best of its ability.

Jockey B Appo (MAKAS KING RULER) was fined $300 for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.

When questioned as to the tactics adopted, App. J Guthmann-Chester stated that bearing in mind the small field today he was instructed to obtain a handy position, however, if there was a strong tempo, to settle further back in the field. App. Guthmann-Chester added that the gelding appeared to slip on jumping away resulting in it losing ground at the start after which he conceded that he should have placed the gelding under more pressure than he did in an effort to obtain a position outside SAINT HUGO. Stewards agreed that App. Guthmann-Chester had erred in failing to make more of an effort in the early stages to settle closer in the run, however, bearing in mind his relative in experience as an apprentice and the way in which STAROCITY and SAINT HUGO finished the race off from the 500m onwards did not believe his actions were culpable under the Rules of Racing.

App. Ainsworth added that passing the 500m she permitted the gelding to shift wider on the track as it had previously performed well when allowed to improve to the outside of the field. App. Ainsworth conceded that she had erred in her decision to shift wider passing the 500m and should have endeavoured to save ground rounding the home turn by improving to the inside of BASIC STRATEGY.
