GENERAL

As P. Hammersley and A. Bullock were indisposed due to injury, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: WASHPOOL LODGE F&M ONE METRO WIN H’CAP – 1400M

PRUE’S ANGEL – B. Stewart reported that his mount travelled well until he asked it to quicken rounding the home turn and it did not respond to his riding and was disappointing.

DEER MOUNTAIN – When questioned as to the tactics adopted in the early stages in leading today’s event, jockey J. Byrne stated that it was not his intention to lead, however, after beginning fairly he allowed the mare to stride forward to obtain a position closer to the fence. Jockey Byrne added that as a consequence he found himself in the lead leaving the 1200m and gave consideration to allowing CASINO EVIL to cross forward of him. Given the moderate tempo in the early and middle stages, he was content to remain in the leading position.

SORNJA – Upon returning to scale M. McGillivray reported that the mare did not feel comfortable in its action in the home straight.

TEDDER AVENUE – Steadied approaching the 1000m when placed in restricted room between SORNJA and AWAKE THE STARS, which shifted in. The mare overraced for a short distance following this incident. R. Maloney, the rider of AWAKE THE STARS, was severely reprimanded for shifting ground when not sufficiently clear.

AKAGE – Slow to begin.

Race 2: OAKWOOD FARM QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1400M

A MAN TO MATCH – When questioned as to the horse’s performance, jockey B. Stewart advised that he was somewhat disappointed in the performance, however, was of the opinion that the moderate tempo in the early and middle stages may have had some effect on the disappointing performance. Jockey Stewart also noted that the colt raced greenly when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

INFLAMMABLE – Delayed the start when it proved difficult to load. A warning was placed on the colt’s barrier manners.

BEACH BABY – Hampered upon straightening by SUGAR SIZZLE, which was taken out by INFLAMMABLE.

MYSTIC MIST – Overraced during the middle stages and near the 800m shifted out and raced wide for the remainder of the event.

As R. Plumb advised that he was unwell, he was examined by the Club doctor following this race and stood down from his engagements at Ipswich.

Race 3: GARRARDS CLASS 6 PLATE – 900M

Trainer N. Rogers was reprimanded for failing to present ALASKAN WOLF on course by the prescribed time. Mr Rogers explained that he was of the understanding that the horse was only required on course 1½ hours prior to the start time of the race instead of the 2 hour requirement for today’s metropolitan meeting. A pre-race blood sample was taken from the mare upon its arrival on course.

ALWAYS SACRED – Began awkwardly. Eased passing the 600m when awkwardly placed at the heels of DARKTOWN STRUTTER.

AZZIE’S READY – Trainer P. Mills advised stewards prior to the race that he had instructed jockey Looker not to use the whip as the gelding had resented it in previous performances.

KILLERMAN’S RUN – Held up for a short distance passing the 100m.

DARKTOWN STRUTTER – Held up in the early stages of the home straight.

COLINELLE – Began awkwardly. Raced 5 wide without cover throughout. Inconvenienced near the 200m.

GIRL IN A MILLION – Began awkwardly. Raced 4 wide without cover. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have sustained a laceration to the near hind leg, consistent with being galloped on.

REBEL MISS – Hampered at the start when tightened for room.

BLUE SEATTLE – Raced 3 wide without cover.

Race 4: SUPERCHICKEN SEAFOOD AND BURGERS BENCHMARK 75 H’CAP – 2200M

CHATELARD – Overraced in the early stages. Eased down by the rider. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying cardiac arrhythmia. Connections were advised that the horse must perform satisfactorily in an official trial and a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG, must be produced prior to the gelding racing again.

DUKE OF CHRISTOPHE – Slow to begin.

METEOROLOGIST – Raced wide for the majority of the event.

SHOTACROSS THE BOW – Overraced in the early stages. Eased down by the rider. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had ruptured the off fore tendon. Trainer D. Murphy was advised that a veterinary clearance will be required prior to the horse racing again.

FIGHTING TEO – Raced wide without cover throughout. D. Smith was fined $300 for using his whip on 11 occasions prior to the 100m.

Race 5: VIVA RACING C,G&E ONE METRO WIN H’CAP – 1400M

Stewards permitted apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester to fulfil his engagement on LOOKS LIKE ELVIS without claiming any of his allowance when no alternative apprentice was available. Apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester was fined $200.

DESMON’S PRIDE – Held up upon straightening.

REACH FOR HEAVEN – Raced wide throughout without cover.

ON THE SPOT – When questioned as to the horse’s performance, jockey J. Orman stated that the gelding was slow to begin and was then slow to muster speed, despite his efforts, before eventually obtaining a position outside the leader near the 1100m. Jockey Orman added that the gelding did not travel comfortably at any stage and failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure leaving the 500m and proved disappointing. Jockey Orman was of the opinion that the gelding may perform better when kept fresh for its races. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer T. Edmonds reported that upon returning to the stables he identified that the gelding had sustained a puncture wound to the near hind leg. Mr Edmonds advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.

EL SHADAY – Overraced throughout the middle stages of the event after obtaining the lead.

Race 6: QUANTUM TRADING BENCHMARK 90 H’CAP – 1800M

LORDAG – Overraced for some distance leaving the 1600m.

HIPPOPUS – Slow to begin.

VELADERO – Overraced in the lead during the early and middle stages.

GOLD AMBITION – Inconvenienced near the 1600m when LORDAG shifted in. Apprentice J. Guthmann-Chester, the rider of LORDAG, was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Held up when unable to improve its position between the 600m and the 400m. Subject to any further submissions, S. Galloway was fined the sum of $100 for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards noted jockey Galloway’s good record.

DON’T TELL MAMA – When questioned as to the horse’s seemingly improved performance, trainer T. Sears stated that he had not been overly disappointed with the horse’s previous starts at Doomben where the racing patterns on those occasions did not appear suitable to back markers. Mr Sears noted that the mare had previously performed well at the same track and distance and benefited from the gear change of blinkers off and winkers on. Stewards noted the explanation.

REIBY THE RED – Slow to begin.

Race 7: BRISBANE AND COASTAL ELECTRICAL BENCHMARK 70 H’CAP – 1200M

VOLTAIRE LUMIERE – Proved difficult to load, delaying the start. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding.

HAPPY HOOVES – When questioned as to the horse’s performance, jockey M. McGillivray stressed his disappointment in the performance and indicated that the gelding was unable to sprint under riding, which he attributed to carrying 59.5kg.

MORE PATASI – Had to be steadied from heels near the 800m.

LICITRA – Bumped by HAPPY HOOVES rounding the home turn when that runner shifted out to improve.

SOFT TOP – Had difficulty securing clear running over the final 200m.

Race 8: MATTHEW DUNN RACING OPEN H’CAP – 1200M

DAL CIELO – When questioned as to the tactics adopted in leading today’s event, jockey R. Maloney stated that it was never his intention to lead, however, after beginning well he elected to press forward to cross AIMALAC MILLIE, after which the gelding found itself in the lead. Given the tempo in the early and middle stages, he was content to remain in the lead.
