After arriving at the barriers, LA VIVA EIGHT (C. Small) underwent a veterinary examination at the request of the rider and was cleared to start.

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, riders of both dead heaters, R. Plumb (PILOTE) and L. Dittman (TORRENS) requested to view the photo finish image with both riders satisfied with the result. Stewards then considered an objection lodged by Jockey L. Dittman the rider of TORRENS the equal dead-heater for 1st against PILOTE (Jockey R. Plumb) the other dead heater, on the grounds of alleged interference over the final 100m. The Stewards were of the opinion that leaving the 100m PILOTE shifted out under pressure resulting in TORRENS being taken wider on the track over the final stages of the event. Bearing in mind that there was no margin between both runners at the finish and the shift from PILOTE, Stewards upheld the protest and amended the placings to read:-

CONCEALED DYNAMITE – After racing in the lead for the majority of the event, commenced to weaken after passing the 400m and in the home straight the rider desisted from pressuring his mount as he was of the opinion something may have been amiss with the filly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be exhibiting a slow post-race recovery.

Stewards enquired into the tactics adopted on NO TIME LIKE NOW (Jockey R. Palmer) and CONCEALED DYNAMITE (App. A. Thompson). Jockey Palmer stated that her instructions were to go forward and lead if possible and then rate the horse to allow it to finish the race off. App. A. Thompson in the presence of senior rider L. Dittman, also advised that his instructions from Trainer L. Ross were to go forward and lead if possible as that is where the filly races best. Trainer L. Ross confirmed the instructions given, however, was disappointed that after being unable to cross to the lead was of the opinion that App. Thompson may have been better electing to restrain the filly at that point of the race in an attempt to take a sit behind the leader. After all parties viewed the film, Stewards acknowledged that passing the 1100m Jockey Palmer did try to restrain her mount in an attempt to allow CONCEALED DYNAMITE to cross but NO TIME LIKE NOW then commenced to over-race and was unable to be restrained. Stewards also noted that App. Thompson even though complying with the instructions given, did not make any significant attempt to restrain the filly and as such, the tempo continued to be strong which resulted in the first 800m being run in 46.93. After giving consideration to the evidence tendered, Stewards were of the opinion that App. Thompson had erred in not making a greater effort to restrain his filly to afford it the opportunity to finish the race off. Taking this into account, Stewards were not of the belief that App. Thompson was in breach of the Rules of Racing and therefore took no further action other than to refer the ride to the Racing Queensland Training Department for further tutelage.
