JAI’S LUCK – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When questioned regarding the performance, Apprentice H. PARADISE PINK – Performed below market expectations. Trainer’s representative N. Hahn reported that in his opinion the mare is better suited to races over a longer distance than today’s event, and will take a fitness benefit from this run.

Race 5: GOONDIWINDI MAIN STREET & HOSPITALITY OUTLETS CLASS B H’CAP – 1000m
1st – TOUCAN UKELELE 2nd – LUCKS IN3rd – IT’S ALL IRISH 4th – BLACK SALT

WARDEH – Began awkwardly, bumped another runner and lost ground. Apprentice E. Cass was questioned regarding the tactics she adopted on the mare, in particular losing ground in the early stages of the event, and her decision to shift wider on the track from the 400m. Apprentice Cass explained that her instructions were to settle behind the leaders, however her mount began awkwardly and she was then forced to steady when tightened for room shortly after the start. She added that after being steadied the mare was reluctant to stretch out despite her urging and as a result she lost touch with the field in the early and middle stages of the event. Apprentice Cass also explained that approaching the 400m WARDEH was travelling strongly and therefore she elected to shift wider on the track in an attempt to improve her position. Stewards accepted Apprentice Cass’s explanation for losing ground in the early stages, however were critical of her decision to shift out approaching the home turn, when in their opinion it would have been more advantageous to maintain a position on the fence and obtain a run towards the inside in the home straight. After viewing the patrol footage Apprentice Cass agreed that she had erred at that point of the race, however bearing in mind Apprentice Cass’s relative inexperience Stewards took the matter no further. Apprentice Cass was fined $100 for using the whip more than five times prior to the 100m, and $100 for using the whip in consecutive strides.

LUCKS IN – Bumped at the start. Raced wide throughout. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
