>Race 1: CLASS B HDCP 1170 Metres

MAKUBA stewards questioned M Powell, rider of second place getter, over tactics adopted between the 800 metres and the 600 metres where he failed to apply pressure to MAKUBA resulting in the gelding losing its position at that point of the race.. M Powell stated after beginning well, MAKUBA was caught wide and near the 900 metres was inclined to lay in. He added shortly after he then steadied MAKUBA as he was reluctant to pressure the horse 800 metres from the finish. M Powell further stated after leaving the 500 metres he commenced to ride MAKUBA along and the horse responded well from that point and finished the race off strongly.. M Powell further stated it was his first ride on a sand track and his first ride back after a significant lay-off from race riding. Trainer T Thomas advised his instructions to M Powell prior to the event were to be positive on the gelding as it is a horse that responds to riding when placed under pressure.. After viewing the DVD replay, Jockey Powell agreed that he had erred in failing to apply pressure to MAKUBA between the 800 metres and 500 metres.. In the circumstances stewards took no direct action, however advised M Powell his standard of riding on this occasion fell below that expected of a rider of his experience.

SMART VENTURE slow to begin.

TIPSY as no other apprentice was available stewards permitted App L Dillon to claim 1kg of her 3kg allowance.. L Dillon was reprimanded after Stewards took into account this was her first ride back after a significant break from race riding.. Slow to begin.

TIME FOR ACTION when questioned regarding the below market performance, rider T Chambers stated the gelding never travelled at any stage of the event, and in her opinion was most disappointing.. A post race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormality.. Trainer T Hong advised stewards it would be his intention to spell TIME FOR ACTION and on this undertaking, stewards took no further action.

Prior to the event jockey M Powell was examined by QAS staff and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagement.

After viewing the DVD replay, it was established that FIRE WITHIN turned its head simultaneously as the start was effected and lost ground.. In the circumstances FIRE WITHIN was declared a definite runner, and correct weight declared on the judge's placings.

FIRE WITHIN turned its head when start was effected and lost ground.

HOPETOUN STREET app D Graham pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 900 metres she permitted the mare to shift in when insufficiently clear of MOLLY MIYAKO which had to be checked.. The riding licence of D Graham was suspended for a period of nine (9) days to commence midnight 28 October up to and including midnight 6 November 2017. In assessing penalty stewards acknowledged D Grahamms guilty plea, deemed the degree of carelessness and the interference to be in the low range, however noted she had only recently returned to race riding after a similar breach of the same rule.

CHAYSEE NN MASON after being loaded into the barriers, broke through, was quickly restrained, examined by the club vet and passed fit to start. J Hoopert reported at scale he was disappointed in the performance today adding that the gelding became fractious after being reloaded and failed to settle fully in the run, and this may have had a bearing on the performance today. A post-race Vet examination failed to reveal any abnormality.

GAS BURNER stewards questioned rider K Gates over her riding in the first 200 metres of the event which saw GAS BURNER, after beginning well, being restrained to the tail of the field.. K Gates advised instructions from Trainer B Gill were to ride GAS BURNER cold and come with one run from the 600 metres, as the gelding had shown a tendency to over-race when restrained in the early stages of its most recent races.. Trainer B Gill confirmed the instructions issued to K Gates.. After viewing the DVD replay, both K Gates and B Gill agreed that K Gates had erred in attempting to comply with the instructions issued by excessively restraining GAS BURNER to the rear of the field and losing a forward position in the first 200 metres of the event.. Stewards took no further action, other than to advise K Gates to ride in a manner that does not leave herself open to query.. B Gill subsequently advised stewards it would be his intention to now retire GAS BURNER.

A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.. Trainer T Hong subsequently advised stewards that ABBEY DAZZLER would be retired from racing, however if these plans were to change, ABBEY DAZZLER must trial satisfactorily before racing again.

JERROCITY checked at the start when a LAUDABLE LEMON jumped outwards. A post race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to the off hind leg.
