GREAT PRETENDER – When questioned regarding her riding of the gelding Apprentice A Thompson explained that after being tardy at the start she elected to ride her mount at the tail of the field where it travelled comfortably throughout. She said that shortly after straightening she attempted a narrow run to the inside of another runner however was disappointed and held for a considerable distance. Apprentice Thompson concurred with stewards that although being slow to begin she should have made a greater effort to improve her position and that when racing at the tail of the field she should have not been three lengths from the remainder of the field.

FORTUNE MASCOT – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding Apprentice M Haley explained that he had been instructed to lead on the gelding. He said that after obtaining the lead in the early stages he elected to restrain his mount in an attempt to slow the tempo. He said that at this point near the 1000 metres other runners improved to his outside and in doing so crowded his running resulting in him losing ground. He added that when another runner improved around him he was then held up on heels when that runner commenced to weaken resulting in him losing further ground. He said that he was again held up in the straight and did not obtain clear running until near the 100 metres where the gelding ran on strongly. Stewards advised Apprentice Haley that bearing in mind his instructions his ride lacked the required judgement and that he should have made a greater effort to hold the lead when the tempo was only moderate.
