TEXT ME – Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously whilst being restrained in the early stages of the event and shifted wider. When questioned regarding her riding of the horse, particularly in the home straight, T. Harrison explained that she anticipated settling in a handy position with cover, however settled back in the field after being a little slow to begin. She added that in the early part of the home straight she tested the horse hands and heels and slapped it down the shoulder with the whip, and following this she was concerned that the gelding did not feel comfortable in its action and for this reason she did not ride with any vigour over the final 150m. Stewards noted jockey Harrison's explanation, however she was charged pursuant to AR. 140(b) in that she failed to report to stewards anything that may have affected the running of her horse in the race. T. Harrison pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined $200. As a result of jockey Harrison's failure to report the matter following the race, a veterinary examination was unable to be conducted as the horse had left the course. Trainer G. Howells was subsequently contacted by stewards and he reported that he was unable to identify any significant abnormalities with the horse following the race, however he undertook to report to stewards anything that comes to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the performance.

RACE 4: THIRST CRUSHER SOLO CLASS 3 H’CAP – 1666M

The start of this race was delayed when the near fore plate on ROGALI had to be refitted behind the barriers.

PALMERA LAD – Stewards questioned apprentice R. Payne regarding her riding of the gelding in the early stages of the race where after beginning well she rode vigorously from the inside barrier, which resulted in the horse leading the race, which is in contrast to its established racing pattern. Apprentice Payne stated that she rode the horse forward today from the barrier in an attempt to get the gelding to travel better than it has at its most recent starts. She added that approaching the first turn she would have been satisfied to surrender the lead to HAPPY ROOM or ALFIE JUNIOR, however those runners did not proceed forward of her mount and for this reason she maintained the lead. Trainer R. Pratt advised that she instructed apprentice Payne to settle in a handy position with cover if possible and that she was surprised when the horse was leading in the early stages. Stewards advised apprentice Payne that in their view she had erred in riding her mount along for a considerable distance after the start, however did not believe that her riding was of such a standard as to be culpable under the rules. Nevertheless, apprentice Payne was referred to the Riding Skills Review Panel for further tutelage.

NAVELINA – Trainer D. Bell advised that from the wide barrier it would be the intention to have B. Stewart ride the mare back in the field if circumstances permit. The horse settled in a midfield position.
