WARFACE – Hampered at the start. Shifted in under pressure over the concluding stages.

MISTA BOSS – Slow into stride.

SAY IT FORWARD – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Raced wide throughout.

MATCH DAY – Slow to begin.

OPTIMISTIC HEART – Slow to begin.

ACE STRYKER – Stewards accepted trainer T. Thomas’s explanation for the late declaration of A. Allen as rider. Inconvenienced behind the heels of the weakening JAMESLEA BOTA approaching the 400m.

JAMESLEA BOTA – Jockey J. Taylor reported at scale that his mount commenced to weaken from the 500m and also made an abnormal respiratory noise. A post-race veterinary examination confirmed the horse was making an abnormal respiratory noise. Trainer C. Halliday will be advised that prior to racing again the horse will require a veterinary clearance, including the results of an endoscopic examination.

AVERNA MOUNTAIN – Jockey M. Hellyer reported at scale that his mount was inclined to hang out throughout the event.

Race 3: GRANDVIEW STUD MAIDEN PLATE – 1666M

SCANDALS – Slow to begin.

INVERARAY – Raced three wide without cover. Andrew Spinks was fined $100 for using the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards took into account jockey Spinks’ recent good record regarding the whip rules.

MUDGEE ROAD – When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, M. Hellyer stated that two starts ago at the Gold Coast the horse was ridden in a more forward position as instructed. He added that at its last start the horse began awkwardly and lost ground, settling further back over an unsuitable trip. He further added that he was instructed to ride aggressively in the early stages to settle in a forward position. Trainer S. Morrisey confirmed that instructions have been previously to settle in a forward position, however last start, due to circumstances, settled further back than anticipated. Stewards noted both explanations. M. Hellyer was fined $200 for using the whip on 8 occasions prior to the 100m. In determining penalty, stewards were mindful of jockey Hellyer’s recent poor record in regard to the whip rules.

ROBBERS COBBER – Overraced for a short distance passing the 1400m.

STRIKER THOMAS – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination behind the barriers after it was revealed that the gelding had a small cut on the nearside of its mouth and passed suitable to race. Slow into stride. Raced wide throughout. Weakened in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that a boil on the nearside of the horse’s mouth had burst. Trainer J. Chan will be advised that the veterinary surgeon recommends that the horse undergo treatment for the condition and that a veterinary clearance will be required prior to the horse racing again.

LETTER OF CHARM – Inclined to lay in for the entire home straight.

MADAM MAHAL – Held up from the 250m until approaching the 50m.

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to SOFT 5.

Race 4: SELECT FLOORING QLD MAIDEN H'CAP – 1350M

KNOCKOURA – Commenced to overrace for a short distance near the 900m and had to be restrained from heels.

SWEET RED WINE – Inclined to lay in passing the 1000m, despite the efforts of its rider. Raced wide throughout. Had to be steadied rounding the home turn when buffeted between TURQUOISE, which shifted in, and STREETSUSS, which shifted out slightly. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted and the horse’s performance, jockey R. Fradd stated that his instructions were to take up a forward position if the gelding showed the necessary speed, however if it failed to do this, to find a position with cover. He added that after beginning only fairly, he was unable to take up a forward position and therefore elected to settle in a midfield position. He added that when racing wide the gelding was inclined to lay in, placing him at some disadvantage and also added that the gelding is better suited on firmer racing surfaces. Trainer D. Forster confirmed these instructions to have the gelding settle where comfortable. She added that the horse resents racing between runners and that receiving a bump shortly after entering the home straight may have contributed to the gelding failing to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

STREETSUSS – Shifted out slightly rounding the home turn, bumping another runner, then a short distance later had difficulty obtaining clear running.

FUTURE EVENT – Began awkwardly and then failed to muster speed despite the efforts of its rider. Trainer J. Zielke was afforded the opportunity to comment on the horse’s seemingly improved performance. He stated that the gelding was well suited as it was back in grade today and was also suited by the increase in distance. He added that in his opinion the gelding will appreciate stepping up to a mile in future. Stewards noted his explanation. Rider R. Cuneen was reminded of his obligations regarding his use of the whip prior to the 100m.

LUCKY GO LUCKY – Raced three wide without cover. Approaching the 100m had to be eased away from the heels of FUTURE EVENT, which shifted out under pressure. Jockey R. Cuneen, the rider of FUTURE EVENT, was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.

LIMESTONE COWBOY – Began awkwardly and was then tightened for room shortly after the start. Forced wider on the track near the 800m when hampered by another runner.

KICK ‘N’ TEL – Had to be eased approaching the 800m when racing to the inside of BEYOND BRAVE, which was taken in by SHEZA YANKEE, which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. Jockey A. Spinks, the rider of SHEZA YANKEE, was reprimanded for this incident.
