GENERAL
As both K. Zechner, J. Franklin and B. Loy were not riding at the meeting, rider replacements were made as per the Raceday Summary Sheet.

Due to sultry weather conditions this race meeting was conducted in accordance with the QRIC caring for racing animals in extreme heat policy with on-course arrival requirements shortened, pre-race parade times significantly reduced and the establishment of numerous on-course cooling stations in the race-day tie-ups and parade areas.

Race 1: PHILLIP GROTH BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP         800m

The start of this race was delayed 3 minutes as SHOCK AND AWE required farrier attention on arrival at the barriers.

POLYLITHIC (NZ) – As the gelding had raced at Gatton on Tuesday the 23rd of January, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Raced wide throughout. Shifted in across the running of SHOCK AND AWE passing the 150m when not fully clear. App S. Champkin, rider of POLYLITHIC, was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident and advised to stop and straighten her mounts sooner in similar circumstances.

SHOCK AND AWE – Required farrier attention on arrival at the barriers. Lost the near fore plate in running. Restrained from heels passing the 150m.

BEAUTY BOOM – Began awkwardly.

DEVIL'S RITE – Raced wide throughout. Jockey J. Stanley reported that his mount was inclined to hang out from the home turn and in the home straight.

NICCI DE ROSA – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced wide for the majority.

Race 2: IEEC.COM.AU CLASS 2 HANDICAP   1200m

KOZANI – Bumped on jumping. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of heat stress.

ORIENTAL PRINCESS – Bumped on jumping.

KALUMBURU – After beginning on terms from the wide barrier it became apparent there was notable speed to the inside and consequently settled further back in the field than may have been expected in an attempt to find cover. Approaching the 700m, became momentarily awkward on heels and was obliged to shift wider.

MARTEDI – Began awkwardly.

Race 3: TAB BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP   2150m

HAROLD THE GREAT (NZ) – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

KNEZE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid out near the 1600m before shifting back in momentarily hampering STRONGBOW. Jockey P. Hamblin was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Obliged to momentarily steady and shift wider away from heels approaching the 300m before attempting to improve to the outside of DELAYED LAUNCH, was then momentarily crowded and obliged to steady off the heels of that runner before having to be restrained off the heels of VISUAL ELEMENT which shifted wider abruptly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of moderate heat stress.

VAN GOGH - A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of mild heat stress.

COME ON EILEEN – Shifted out and bumped on jumping. Laid out in the early stages despite the efforts of its rider crowding STRONGBOW which was obliged to steady. Trainer Mr A. Cowell was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the mare.

STRONGBOW (NZ) – Bumped on jumping. Laid out under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.

VISUAL ELEMENT – Began awkwardly. Momentarily crowded near the 1600m. Approaching the 300m shifted out when not fully clear of KNEZE causing that runner to be momentarily steadied and shifted wider, before soon after again abruptly shifted out when not fully clear of KNEZE causing that runner to be restrained before continuing to shift wider and bumping with DELAYED LAUNCH whilst taking that runner and HAROLD THE GREAT wider on the track. Apprentice S. McCann was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for careless riding in this incident and advised by Stewards to exercise far greater care when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Stewards determined that the fact KNEEZE was already having to be restrained off the heels of DELAYED LAUNCH prior to VISUAL ELEMENTS second (2nd) shift to be a mitigating factor in the overall interference. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of moderate heat stress.

SHEZADANDI – Began awkwardly.

VACATION LEAVE – Raced wide from the 700m.

PACKAGE – Momentarily steadied near the 1600m.

DELAYED LAUNCH (NZ) – App S. Champkin dropped her whip near the 250m.

Race 4: SEVEN NEWS BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1100m

The start of Race’s 4-6 were delayed one time slot with Race 7 scheduled to start at 5.56pm to permit the Veterinary Surgeons additional time to monitor and care for horses as appropriate due to the sultry conditions.

BOBBY AXELROD – Bumped shortly after the start. Compounded in the home straight. When asked to comment on the instructions given and the tactics adopted, App T. Leslight stated that he was instructed to lead on the gelding at all costs, and that BOBBY AXELROD had a tendency to weaken when challenged for position. App Leslight conceded he may have been overly concerned about SALT LAKE BETTY becoming position to his mounts immediate outside and concurred with Stewards that he had erred in not allowing the gelding easier sectionals in the middle stages. App Leslight also stated that the gelding was up in grade from its previous start at Warwick which, in his opinion, was likely also a telling factor in the finish. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying mild heat stress.

ROWDASH – Slow into stride.

SALT LAKE BETTY – Bumped shortly after the start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying symptoms of mild heat stress.

DUCHESS OF MILAN – Buffeted shortly after the start.

Race 5: GREAT NORTHERN MAIDEN HANDICAP   1200m

ALL ABOUT LEWIS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Lost the off fore plate in running.

SUENITO – Began awkwardly. Lost the near fore plate in running. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

LAZULITE (NZ) – Change of tactics – to be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Was ridden accordingly. Momentarily raced keenly on heels leaving the 800m.

ALLEZBEC – Momentarily held up for clear running entering the home straight before shifting wider approaching the 350m.

WHYTEEPEE – Began awkwardly.

A BIT BAZARRE – Began awkwardly. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Lost the off fore plate in running.

SUNCRAFT – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout. On returning to the mounting yard was found to have a minor laceration to the off-hind fetlock consistent with being galloped on in running.

ADALISSA – Momentarily hampered and shifted wider near the 100m.

CLASSIQUE GAL – Shifted out marginally soon after straightening momentarily hampering ADALISSA. Jockey J. Stanley was advised to exercise greater care. Held up for clear running from a point soon after entering the home straight before shifting in leaving the 100m.

PHEEBLE'S SPIRIT – Shifted out on jumping. Raced wide throughout. Performed above market expectations. Trainer M. Kropp advised post-race that the stable expected a forward showing from the mare, and in their opinion the mare was under-represented in the market.

TORQUE ESPAGNA – As App J. Franklin was unable to fulfil the allotted weight, Stewards permitted App E Lang to be substituted as rider of the mare. Apprentice Franklin was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR190(3). Laid out rounding the home turn.

ALPHA JANE – Raced wide throughout.

MISS SHU- Trainer T Edmonds will be advised the filly would require a veterinary certificate of fitness prior to again being permitted to start in a race after being scratched on veterinary advice prior to the advertised scratching time.

COLD ONE – Raced keenly approaching the 1000m when being restrained in an effort to obtain a position with cover nearer the inside running rail. Continued to race keenly on heels for some distance thereafter. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils in running. As this was the first such occurrence Trainer G. Thornton was advised of the provisions of AR79 in that the gelding must not race for a period of three months and on resuming must gallop 1000m in the presence of a Steward.

FLASH PRINCE – Reared on jumping and hampered shortly after.

NEOCLASSICISM – Bumped on jumping. Raced keenly on heels leaving the 800m. Obliged to shift wider approaching the 200m to obtain clear running.

AWAIT THE STORM – As B. Loy was unable to fulfil his engagement due to illness Stewards permitted Jockey J. Taylor to be substituted as rider of the gelding. Jockey B Loy was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to again being permitted to race ride. Bumped on jumping.

BRONZE DRAGON – Compounded in the home straight. Jockey K. Matheson could offer no explanation for the poor performance. Trainer D Forester advised that, in her opinion, the gelding has a weak constitution which was telling in the finish of the event after the genuine pace throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

SIAN STAR – Bumped on jumping. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.

HERECUM DA DRUMS – Slow to begin.
