Due to extreme hot weather for North Eastern Victoria, the Shepparton greyhound meeting had to vacate its twilight race slot and as a result the scheduled starting time for Race 5 at Kilcoy was rescheduled to from 3.32 pm to 3.34 pm.
Race 1: Jill Jones & David Cohen QTIS 3yo Maiden Handicap- 1500m
MISHANI NEFERTITI – Slow to begin.
ROMANOV – Raced wide in the early stages.
HOT BOT – When questioned regarding the performance, jockey Goold stated that after obtaining a forward position as instructed, the filly was under pressure from the 600m and proved disappointing.
Race 2: Cannonball Christmas Capers Sun 6 Dec F&M Class 1 m
HIMALAYAN WOLF – Slow to begin.
HENNY’S HOPE – Began awkwardly. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, apprentice R. Johnston-Bell stated that the mare raced flat today and was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery.
SPINIFEX FIRE – Stewards questioned apprentice A. Denby in the company of jockey’s advocate Mr G. Smith, in regards to her riding over the final 600m, and in particular not improving her position prior to the home turn when there appeared opportunity to do so. Apprentice A. Denby stated that she had specific instructions to improve to the inside of other runners and to keep the horse balanced around the tight track before placing it under pressure soon after straightening, which she did. Stewards advised apprentice Denby, bearing in mind the short straight at Kilcoy, that it would have been a better option to put her mount into the race earlier than she did on this occasion.
Race 3: Butler McDermott Lawyers F&M Maidne Plate – 1200m
RESPONSIBLE – Raced without its tongue-tie which was part of its advertised gear. Trainer J. McLachlan was fined the sum of $100m.
TOOGOOLAWAH TRUMP – A veterinary examination of the horse, which was fractious in the barriers, cleared the filly to start. Laid in under pressure for the majority of the home straight.
VON FAN – Slow to begin.
DAY LILLY – Slow to begin. Trainer G. Teal was advised that the mare, which finished a distant last, would be barred from TAB venues until its form improved a country venues.
JUE JUE ANGEL – Slow to begin.
JADED – Began awkwardly.
ABSTAIN – Raced 3 deep in the early stages. Trainer M. Lakey was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time.
Race 4: Carlton-Mid Cannonball Sun 6 Dec Class 3 Plate - 1060m
THAT’S JERRY – Declared a late scratching by stewards at 11.35 am.
SOCIETY QUEEN – Tightened for room shortly after the start.
EAGLE’S NEST – Raced 3 deep without cover for the majority of the race.
Race 5: Kilcoy Exchange Hotel CG&E Maiden Plate - 1200m
FYNSTAR – Trainer G. Pollock was fined $100 for presenting and racing the gelding with a Norton bit, which was part of its advertised gear.
ROUGH KISS – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Jockey R. Morris reported to stewards it was not his intention to settle as far back in the field, however after beginning awkwardly and losing ground at the start, he settled towards the rear of the field.
PROSPECTING – Near the 800m commenced to hang out and had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of FORDYCE KNIGHT and continued to hang out for the remainder, proving difficult to ride. Connections were advised that a warning would be placed on the gelding regarding its racing manners.
BOWLER LANE – Shifted in and away from another runner and became unbalanced. Tightened for room near the 400m and had to be eased.
SIR EARLSTOUN – Inclined to hang in for a short distance near the 400m.
ROUGE SUN – Stewards afforded jockey T. Treichel the opportunity to comment on the performance of the gelding. He stated that after having a favourable run throughout the gelding was under pressure from the 600m and failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 6: Carlton Mid Cannonball Final 6 Dec CG&E Class 1 H’cap - 1200m
SNIPPET EXPRESS – As A. Spinks was to be overweight, B. Stower was substituted as the rider of that gelding. Bearing in mind jockey Spinks’ good record, stewards imposed a reprimand on this occasion.
LAMBENCY – Trainer M. Brosnan was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time. Attempted to shift out approaching the 400m when endeavouring to obtain clear running however was held up for a short distance rounding the home turn.
SIR STEPHEN – Slow to begin. Hung out badly and raced extremely wide throughout, and as a result took no competitive part in the race. Trainer J. Hearne advised stewards it was now his intention to retire the horse from the stable. Nevertheless, stewards advised Mr Hearne that the gelding would be required to trial satisfactorily in an official trial prior to racing again. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.
Race 7: Kilcoy Christmas Cup Sun 6 Dec Rating Band 0-62 H’cap – 1500m
ARGIE’S HEART – Hampered at the start when tightened for room.
SCOOT FILOOT – Hampered at the start when tightened for room. Jockey K. Gates reported to stewards it was not her intention to settle as far back, however after being hampered at the start never travelled comfortably and settled towards the rear of the field.
ARTISTIC CHOICE – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.
ROUGH AND RECKLESS – Bumped at the start. Stewards questioned apprentice R. Payne regarding the tactics adopted in the early and middle stages, particularly when she maintained the lead when challenged strongly by AIR DIAMOND and then commenced to set a steady tempo. She stated the instructions were to maintain the lead on the gelding as this was how the horse won its previous start. She also added that when AIR DIAMOND improved to her outside approaching the 800m, she allowed her mount to maintain the lead to adhere to her instructions, however when AIR DIAMOND eventually crossed her passing the 600m, ROUGH AND RECKLESS commenced to weaken and finished a distant last. Stewards were mindful of her instructions, nevertheless advised apprentice Payne it would have been a better option to allow AIR DIAMOND to cross to the lead near the 800m, thereby allowing her mount some slower sectionals in the middle stages to give her mount the opportunity to finish the race off. Stewards noted apprentice Payne’s comments.
CHINSKY – Began awkwardly and shifted in.
BRIGLIADORO – Shortly after the start was steadied when tightened for room.
