Race 1: Bribie Island RSL Long Tan 1966-2016 Ratings Band 0-60 H’cap - 1060m

Correct weight was delayed to allow the connections of the 3rd placegetter, Claradini, to view the stewards’ patrol footage of the straight to ascertain if there were grounds to lodge a protest against Go Get Sum being declared the winner. Subsequently, the connections did not wish to proceed.

PEZENAS – Began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping another runner. Had a tendency to lay in under pressure approaching the finish line, tightening Hopetoun Street and Claradini.

RACEY MACEY – Tightened for room and bumped at the start. Apprentice M. Schrapel reported at scale that his mount hung out in the early stages of the event.

RED BOHEMIA - Tightened for room at the start.

DARLING BE GOOD - Had to be steadied rounding the 800m turn when racing in restricted room.

JAI’S LUCK – Had to be steadied when placed awkwardly at the heels of Darling Be Good passing the 800m.


CLARADINI – Had a tendency to get its head up after passing the 600m and had to be steadied when tightened for room by GO GET SUM, which shifted in when not fully clear. At a subsequent inquiry, jockey T. Banks, rider of GO GET SUM, was issued with a reprimand. Tightened close to the finish line.

HOPETOUN STREET – Raced wide in the early stages before pressing forward to obtain a position outside the leader passing the 600m. Bumped on a number of occasions passing the 400m. Tightened close to the finish line.

GO GET SOME – Bumped on a number of occasions passing the 400m.

CHILLI DIPPER – Raced wide throughout.



Race 2: Ian & Di McCauley Somalia Maiden Plate – 1200m

DAUNTING ROSE – Slow to begin.

SHE’S FOR RANSOM – Slow to begin.

FLASH SAMMY – Hung out after passing the 1000m and continued to do so for the remainder of the event, taking no competitive part in the race. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer S. Watters was nevertheless advised that a further barrier certificate must be obtained prior to its next race start.

DREAM OF CHOICE – Became unbalanced after passing the 800m, almost dislodging its rider.

HALPIN – Prior to the race trainer B. Lunney advised stewards that he had instructed apprentice H. English not to use the whip on the gelding. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.


Race 3: Butler McDermott Lawyers Diggers Cup Ratings Band 0-60 H’cap – 1200m

THE GOLDEN PIG – Reared as the star was effected and lost ground.

ROYALTOWN ROAD – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running from the 500m until just after straightening. When questioned his riding tactics between the 500m and 250m, where there appeared opportunity to shift out to improve into the race, apprentice M. Schrapel advised that he felt his best option at this stage was to endeavor to gain a run through the field rather than improving to the outside. Subsequently after viewing the stewards’ footage he conceded that he may have erred at this point and that shifting to the outside would have been the better option to allow his mount clear running to finish the race off. Whilst stewards were of the opinion that apprentice Schrapel may have erred at this stage, they did not feel his actions were sufficiently culpable under the rules to take action and therefore noted the circumstances.

JUPITER PALM - Began awkwardly and shifted out, bumping another runner. Overraced in the early and middle stages.

CLARGORANDA – Bumped by another runner approaching the 100m. Overraced in the early and middle stages.

FAMECHON BARONESS – Bumped at the start.

COOL AS HEL – Was shifted wider on the track after passing the 500m by another runner.


Race 4: Carlton-Mid Vietnam Veterans Cup Benchmark 70 H’cap - 1200m

STORM MAGIC – Slow to begin.

TURBO TEDDY – Made the first turn awkwardly and laid out.

BURLEIGH BULLET – When questioned, apprentice R. Johnston-Bell stated that the mare was unable to hold the lead however travelled comfortably behind the leader for the majority of the event. He added however when pressured after passing the 450m, his mount failed to respond to his riding and, in his opinion, was disappointing. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a mild slow post race recovery.


Race 5: Ian & Di McCauley East Timor/Timor Leste Class 1 H’cap – 1200m

The start of this race was delayed due to a patron requiring ambulance assistance. The race was rescheduled to start at 4.14 pm.

MAN OF LAW – As apprentice H. English was riding at another venue, stewards permitted a change of rider to jockey G. Goold. Held up for clear running from the 400m until straightening.

WALL STREET VIXEN - Due to a misunderstanding A. Badger was dually engaged for this gelding. R. Johnston-Bell was substituted as the rider of the horse.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by jockey A. Badger, rider of the 2nd placegetter, Fab’s Cowboy, against Cavitation being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards patrol video, stewards found that whilst Cavitation did shift ground at this stage and made slight contact with Fab’s Cowboy on 2 occasions, they did not believe, bearing in mind the head margin between both runners at the finish, that such contact warranted a reversal of placings and therefore the protest was dismissed and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge’s placings.

SAVAGE HOOD – Began awkwardly and shifted in, making contact with KARAHARAGA.

KARAHARAGA – Bumped at the start.– Tightened for room soon after the start between runners. Heavily bumped rounding the home turn and forced wider on the track. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

DUBLING – Heavily bumped rounding the home turn and forced wider on the track.

MR SEDUCTION – Tightened for room soon after the start between runners.

I AM RELENTLESS – Laid out and bumped another runner rounding the home turn.

FAB’S COWBOY – Held up for clear running approaching the home turn.

CAVITATION – Held up for clear running approaching the home turn.

LIMERICK STAR – Raced wide.


Race 6: Caloundra RSL IRAQ/Afghanistan Class 2 H’cap – 1500m

The start of this race was rescheduled to start at 4.56 pm due to the earlier incident involving a patron.

Stewards permitted jockey G.Goold to ride ROBARD 1kg overweight as there was no other rider available.

BLAZING INFERNO – Apprentice R. Johnston-Belle was reprimanded for failing to claim his full allowance on his mount and on Wall Street (Race 5). Raced wide throughout.

On return to scale a protest was lodged by jockey M. Heagney, rider of the 2nd placegetter, Brocson, against Worth The Wait being declared the winner, alleging interference at the 1100m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards patrol video, stewards found that whilst Brocson did suffer interference and lose some ground, stewards did not believe that B. Appo, rider of Worth The Wait, was solely responsible for the incident, and also bearing in mind the margin of three-quarters of a length, stewards dismissed the protest and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge’s placings.

WISCONSIN – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

ARTISTIC CHOICE – Apprentice J. Hodge was fined $100 for returning to scale overweight.
Jockey B. Derbyshire, rider of Snippet Express, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that passing the 1100m she allowed her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of ARTISTIC CHOICE, resulting in rider apprentice J. Hodge having to take hold of his mount, which brushed the running rail and lost its rightful running. Jockey Derbyshire was suspended from riding in races for a period of 7 days, to commence at midnight, 23 August and to expire at midnight, 30 August.
