Stewards opened an inquiry into the running and handling of the mare. After taking initial evidence from apprentice J Woodhouse in the presence of his master, M Eggleston, trainer of DUSTY, the inquiry was adjourned to a date and time to be fixed to allow stewards to peruse over further evidence including betting activity. A post-race vet examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities.

Race 4: SOMERSET REGIONAL COUNCIL MAIDEN PLATE – 800M

Correct weight was delayed to allow stewards to view the patrol film of the start to ensure COALBANK CAVIAR was not denied a fair start. After doing so stewards were satisfied COALBANK CAVIAR had jumped with the field and therefore was declared a runner.

ELEGIES – Passing the 1500m when following THE GOLDEN PIG became entangled when that horse fell and also fell dislodging rider G Geran.

After being examined by the veterinarian on track the gelding was floated back to Toowoomba for further veterinary tests to be carried out. Trainer R Hilton was advised to report back to Stewards the results of the tests and to provide a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

ROYALTOWN ROAD – Fell at the 1500m when trailing the leaders and couldn’t avoid the fallen horses, dislodging apprentice C Bayliss. Initial examination revealed no significant findings however trainer K Jones was advised to provide a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

As there were horses and riders injured on the track near the home turn and unable to be moved, the race was aborted and all horses were pulled up prior to reaching to 500m.

Apprentice C Bayliss was examined and stood down by ambulance personnel before being cleared to go home. Jockey’s G Geran and J Mallyon were transported to Caboolture Hospital were further examinations.

Stewards declared the race a no race and therefore the race was abandoned.

An inquiry into the reasons for the horses and riders falling and being dislodged from their mounts was adjourned to a later date to allow the fallen riders to be present.

Stewards spoke with Racing Queensland officials to discuss whether any compensation be forth coming to all runners regarding the abandonment of the race. Racing Queensland officials advised that a decision on this matter will be determined over the coming days.

Due to other ambulances being required and the nature of the injuries to horses and riders there was indefinite delay for the final race.

Prior to the replacement ambulance arriving on course Stewards inspected the section of the track where the horses fell and deemed it safe for racing to continue. Stewards also gave all riders in the last race the opportunity to state whether they were comfortable to take their mounts in the last race due to the emotional impact the fall may have had on them. All riders indicated that they were happy to proceed and they also inspected the section of track in the presence of Stewards and confirmed the section of track was safe for racing.

At a subsequent inquiry apprentice J Woodhouse was fined the sum of $500 for failing to claim down to his advertised riding weight in races 3,4,7. In determining penalty Stewards were mindful of his poor record regarding a breach of this rule.

ROCKING MY WORLD – Due to the amended time an application to scratch was made by trainer P Jenkins. Mr Jenkins explained that the gelding had been at the track for most of the day and with the hot conditions was of the opinion the it had run its race already.
