GENERAL: Due to no riders being available the following horses were declared late scratchings at 12.30pm:
Race 2 – RHYTHM NATION, TING TONG TIGER, BOLD DICTATOR, GO SAI, SWEENEY
Race 3 – BOLD DICTATOR

RACE 1: GAVIN BROS. MEMORIAL MAIDEN PLATE 1000M
1st – Danrocking 2nd – Major Legacy 3rd – Fear None 4th – Golden Czar

TUCKSHOP OPTIONS – resented the kickback during the race. Jockey W Doyle was fined $200 for excessive use of the whip in a backhand manner on a runner out of contention. In determining the penalty stewards were mindful of jockey Doyle’s recent poor record relating to breaches of the whip rules.

RACE 2: EDGAR THOMAS TOWNER VC, MC MEMORIAL BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP 1100M
1st – Forced Salute 2nd – Flirting Dragon 3rd – Give It Berries 4th – Tenmoregrand

FORCED SALUTE – on jumping away made heavy contact with ANOTHER SHADE.

ANOTHER SHADE – on jumping away made heavy contact with FORCED SALUTE.

GIVE IT BERRIES – raced wide throughout

LEGAL STAR – raced wide throughout. When questioned regarding its performance, rider stated that the horse was not interested in racing and recommended to the trainer that the horse be retired. Trainer W Irwin was interviewed regarding the performance of the gelding today and its recent disappointing runs, and he indicated to stewards that it is now his intention to retire the gelding from racing.

RACE 3: ERNIE MCCULLAGH MEMORIAL CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1200M
1st – Conquistador 2nd – Ice Melody 3rd – Shaftsman 4th – Billy Jay

SHAFTSMAN – slow into stride. Laid in under pressure early in the home straight and was momentarily held up for a run when on the heels of another runner between the 200 and 100 metre mark.

NEPTUNE EXPRESS – slow into stride and approaching the 450 metre mark when beginning to lose ground had to be checked when hampered by another runner.

FINNIGAN’S FOLLY – hampered by another runner and lost ground approaching the 450 metre mark.

An enquiry was opened into the reason why NEPTUNE EXPRESS and FINNIGAN’S FOLLY were hampered and lost ground approaching the 600 metre mark. It was established that CONQUISTADOR (R Hancock) shifted in marginally, making slight contact with RHYTHM NATION (D Rewald), which then shifted in, making contact with NEPTUNE EXPRESS (W Doyle), which made contact with FINNIGAN’S FOLLY (S McGovern). After viewing the available films and hearing all of the evidence, stewards determined that even though CONQUISTADOR made slight contact with RHYTHM NATION, which may have over-reacted to the brush and then shift in, they could not be satisfied that one rider was to blame but were of the opinion that both R Hancock and D Rewald were dually responsible for the incident. Stewards issued both jockeys with a severe reprimand and advised them to exercise more care in the future.

RACE 4:THE LONGREACH RSL MEMORIAL SERVICES & SUB-BRANCH BENCHMARK 60 HCP 1400M
1st – Month of Sundays 2nd – Count Blevic 3rd – Vice President 4th – Nou Camp

VICE PRESIDENT – slow to jump

COUNT BLEVIC – raced wide approaching the home turn and drifted in under pressure at the 200 metre mark.

MONTH OF SUNDAYS – raced wide rounding the home turn

RACE 5: 100 YEARS OF ANZAC CENTENARY DIGGERS CUP OPEN HANDICAP 1400M
1st – Peace Talks 2nd – Reigning to Win 3rd – Lucasam 4th – Holey Gadoley

Stewards accepted trainer D Rewald’s explanation for the late jockey declaration for NO OTHER WAY.

LUCASAM – slow into stride

PEACE TALKS – slow into stride and raced in restricted room from 250m to 100m.

HOLEY GADOLEY – after beginning well from an outside alley, raced wide early when trying to be restrained to obtain cover, however was unable to find cover and then raced three wide for the remainder of the event.
