BAR BABY - Shied away from a fallen runner and shifted wider near the 800 metres. A post-race Veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Following the running of this event Stewards inquired into the reason why NONA SAAL’S GIRL ridden by Jockey S Wiseman, when leading and in clear running, fell near the 800 metres resulting in the mare having to be humanely euthanased. Jockey Wiseman and Trainer Mr. S Cooper were both in attendance and viewed the available patrol footage which provided clear evidence that NONA SAAL’S GIRL, after crossing from the outside barrier to reach the lead near the 900 metres, had faltered in its action just prior to reaching the 800 metres marker and fallen as a result. It was also clearly evident from the footage that no other horse or rider had any bearing on the incident. NONA SAAL’S GIRL, upon examination by the Veterinarian immediately following the incident, was found to have sustained fractures to the off hind leg. Jockey Wiseman, who was attended by Paramedics, was cleared to fulfil her remaining engagements.

Race 2: Pop Massinghaham Memorial Class B Handicap 1000 metres:

ROCKETTE ROCKET – Dipped on jumping.

FALSE ALARM – Near the 600 metres had to be momentarily restrained off the heels of another runner which shifted in when not quite clear. Was giving ground near the 150 metres when switched around the heels of another runner which was shifting out.

On returning to scale Jockey W D’Avila who rode 4th placegetter YIFAN lodged an objection against 2nd placegetter KAP IT OFF ridden by Apprentice N Nelson on the grounds of alleged interference near the 100 metres. After hearing evidence from both Jockeys and Connections of both runners, and viewing available patrol footage, Stewards were of the opinion that although KAP IT OFF was shifting out under pressure at this point, and did impede the momentum of YIFAN, any ground lost by YIFAN would not have exceeded the 2 lengths margin which separated the 2 runners at the winning post. Consequently Stewards dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the semaphored numbers. At a subsequent inquiry Apprentice N Nelson was issued with a severe reprimand for careless riding under the provisions of AR137(a) in that she had allowed her mount KAP IT OFF to shift out near the 150 metres, slightly inconveniencing the running of FALSE ALARM ridden by Jockey S Wilson, and that further, she had allowed KAP IT OFF to continue to shift out near the 100 metres inconveniencing the running of YIFAN ridden by W D’Avila.
