RACE 1: ZONTA MAIDEN HANDICAP – 1000M

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be suffering from a suspect bowed tendon to its off fore leg. Trainer B. Johnson stated that the mare would now be retired from racing. Nevertheless, stewards advised Mr Johnson that Mountapanther would require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

RACE 2: PAULA LANE MEMORIAL BMK 55 HCP – 1000M

A. Taylor was a late rider declaration as the rider of STAR SYSTEM due to their being no other riders available at jockey declaration time.

THE YOUNGFELLA – Tightened for room at the start and lost significant ground. Apprentice M. Taylor was questioned in regards to the performance of the gelding and stated that after being tightened for room at the start and losing ground that she was forced to settle back further than anticipated. She added that the gelding was then placed under pressure from the home turn and finished strongly over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant findings.

MYSTERY ANGEL – Jumped out at the start making contact with another runner.

RACE 3: DR JIM BAKER AND COUNCILLOR JILL BAKER OPEN HCP – 1000M

Correct weight was delayed when jockey A. Taylor, the rider of THE ROBBER, was afforded the opportunity to view the patrol film to ascertain whether she had grounds to make application to be declared a non-runner. After viewing the film available, jockey A. Taylor proceeded to make application to be declared a non-runner. Stewards found that the barrier in which THE ROBBER was drawn, did fail to open simultaneously with the rest of the field denying it a fair start. Acting under the provisions AR. 134, stewards subsequently declared THE ROBBER a non-runner. Stewards then ordered that all monies invested on the ROBBER be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

4 cents in the dollar for the Win #2
15 cents in the dollar for place of winner #2
10 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #1
17 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #3

Correct weight was further delayed when J. Geppert, the rider of 5th place getter, PLUMB BOB, lodged a protest against 3rd place-getter, SATAN’S CHARIOT, alleging interference near the 600m. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and from the stewards’ observations, stewards found at a point near the 600m, SATAN’S CHARIOT shifted in tightening the running of PLUMB BOB, resulting in the gelding having to be checked, clipping the heels of SATAN’S CHARIOT and losing its rightful running.
Bearing in mind the margin between the relevant horses at the finish and the degree of interference suffered, stewards were satisfied that a reversal of placings was warranted and the protest was upheld and the Judge’s placings altered to read:

1st - OLYMPIA’S FLAME #2
2nd - SPEEDING DRAGON #1
3rd – DANA DANCER #3
4th – PLUMB BOB #5
5th – SATAN’S CHARIOT #6

At a subsequent enquiry, apprentice S. Palmer’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period covered by 2 country race meetings, to commence at midnight 30th MAY and expire at midnight, 13th JUNE.

ASTRONOMER – Began awkwardly, shifted out making contact with another runner and becoming momentarily unbalanced. Raced wide for the majority of the event.

MUGMARINO – Bumped by another runner shortly after the start.

THE WATER BOMBER – Raced wide for the majority of the event.
