SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From Doomben 11.4.15 – Race 8: When questioned regarding the performance of BOLD ATTRACTION, B. Stewart explained that in the early stages he was caught extremely wide and therefore approaching the first turn he elected to restrain the colt to find a position closer to the rail. He said that not long after doing this, the horse dropped the bit badly and became detached from the main body of the field. He added that on straightening he was concerned there was something amiss with the mare and for this reason he did not persist in riding it out over the concluding stages. He further added that not long after passing the winning post the horse made an abnormal breathing noise. Trainer G. Taylor advised that other than the colt receiving a heavy bump in the early stages, he was somewhat mystified as to its disappointing performance. He said it was his intention to have it undergo a thorough veterinary examination on Monday morning, the results of which he would report to stewards.

Race 1: FORD BROTHERS FENCING MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M

BEL POLEDRO – Raced wide and hung out for the majority of the event and took no competitive part in the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer M. Lakey was advised that the horse must trial before its next race start.

KASCHUBA – Hampered at the start. Checked near the 900m to avoid heels when MISTY MONTANA (M. Powell) shifted in when insufficiently clear. Apprentice M. Powell pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding and his licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, to commence at midnight on Sunday, 12 April, and expire at midnight on Thursday, 23 April 2015. In assessing penalty, stewards took into account apprentice Powell’s plea of guilty and his previous good riding record. D. Browne stated that his intentions were to settle in a more forward position, however after being hampered at the start and receiving a check at the 900m, he settled further back in the field than anticipated. He added that the gelding ran on well in the straight and in his opinion is better suited in races over a longer distance.

SERAPHIMS – Held up from approaching the 300m until leaving the 200m.

HAVEN DUKE – Connections advised that the horse would be ridden further back in the field. The horse was ridden accordingly. Raced uncompetitively. Trainer N. Hocking indicated that he would consider spelling the horse. Stewards advised Mr Hocking that a warning would be placed on the horse for its performance.

KING OF THE CASTLE – Raced wide for the majority of the event.

DEB’S SPIRIT – Inconvenienced at the 800m.

EIGHT BEAT KICK – Bumped with another runner on jumping away.

I DOUBT I CAN – T. Bell explained that his intentions were to ride the horse more forward, however after being hampered at the start he was obliged to race further back in the field than anticipated. He added he was then momentarily held up near the 300m and the horse finished the race off well.

Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to SOFT 6.

Race 2: FORD BROTHERS FENCING MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M

LEGALLY COOL – Slow to begin.

TORCH – Jumped out at the start.

HOMEHILL – Bumped with another runner rounding the home turn. Rider R. McMahon stated that after beginning awkwardly he settled at the rear of the field and leaving the 800m was following MR MOONBEAM which at that stage of the race was under pressure. MR MOONBEAM – Held up and disappointed for a run rounding the home turn and bumped with another runner before being checked at the 400m.

EULO – Raced wide throughout.

THOU ART – Caught wide in the early stages.

PUT YOUR HANDS UP – Connections advised that from the inside barrier it would be their intention to have the horse ridden in a forward position. The horse was ridden accordingly.

WILLOYD – Bled from both nostrils. Will now be ineligible to race for 3 months, and prior to resuming racing must perform satisfactorily in a 1000m gallop in the presence of a steward.

LACADA RAIN – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running over the concluding stages.

Race 5: FORD BROTHERS FENCING QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1000M

0 cent in the dollar for the Win #5
1 cent in the dollar for place of winner #5

WAR HAMMER – Shifted in and bumped another runner near the 500m. J. Taylor reported that in his opinion the horse would be better suited settling further back in the field and that he had made a recommendation to connections to remove the blinkers for the horse’s next start. Trainer R. Wilson agreed with the comments of J. Taylor.

LADY DENMAN – Raced wide throughout.

LUCKY ELLA – Fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly and lost ground, then shifted out and bumped another runner. Hampered by another runner near the 700m and lost ground.

CELESTIAL GODDESS – Held up for clear running from the 100m and went to the line without being fully tested. M. Hellyer stated that his intentions were to ride more forward, however after runners to his inside kicked up, he elected to restrain to a position with cover. He added that the gelding did not handle the prevailing track conditions and would derive benefit from today’s run.

REFUSTRESS – Apprentice B. Ainsworth reported that her mount overraced in the early and middle stages.

DUOROSA – Had difficulty securing clear running from the 200m to the 100m. L. Rolls reported that the horse began only fairly today, and as the filly resents being bustled early, from the wide draw he elected to restrain when runners inside kicked up ahead of him.

Race 9: FORD BROTHERS FENCING CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1400M

Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer P. Nolan Jnr for the late scratching of DRIVING WHEELS.

Stewards inquired into an incident that occurred near the 1200m when LEGAL COUNSEL, which was racing between WEWONYA and NOT CLOSE, appeared to clip heels and blundered, dislodging A. Taylor. After taking initial evidence from apprentice S. Eilbeck (PUNTERS JOURNEY), apprentice G. Goold (WEWONYA) and M. Hellyer (NOT CLOSE), stewards adjourned the inquiry to a date to be fixed to allow A. Race 10: FORD BROTHERS FENCING CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1400M

The start of this race was delayed whilst awaiting the arrival of a replacement ambulance.

BALAKLAVA – When asked to comment on the horse’s disappointing performance, D. Browne stated that near the 600m the horse blundered and when rounding the home turn he attempted to shift wider on the track to improve and made significant contact with another runner. He felt that following this the horse did not respond to his riding and despite being marginally held up leaving the 400m, did not finish the race off well.

MUNSTER – Slow to begin.

HARNILIAM – Had to be steadied away from heels leaving the 900m. Blundered at the 600m. B. He indicated that the horse blundered on a number of occasions rounding the home turn and then did not respond to his riding in the home straight. Trainer D. Murphy indicated that in the lead up to today’s event the horse had accepted for a number of venues which had been abandoned and this, in his opinion, was not a suitable lead up to today’s event and may have had a bearing on the performance. Mr Murphy gave an undertaking to notify stewards of anything that comes to light in coming days which may have had an effect on the performance.

Prior to the running of this event stewards inspected a section of the track near the 600m and were satisfied with the condition of the track surface.

IT’S ON THE POCKET – Trainer D. Schmidt stated that the horse was having its first start for his stable today and previously the horse had shown a tendency to overrace in its races. He therefore instructed B. Stewart to ride the horse with cover. He said that after being caught wide from its wide gate the horse was then obliged to restrain further back in the field than anticipated.

BASHAN – Slow to begin. Steadied near the 150m when placed in restricted room between runners. G. NIVALI – Obliged to alter course when disappointed for a run after leaving the 400m. T.
